I am meeting a friend for a day in boston, and would like to find out what you think is a great place for lunch.
Can be a sandwich - type place, as long as it is fantastic, but am also inquiring about more sbustantial meals as well.
Trying to avoud the south end, parking is too much of a pain, but will consider most other areas.
Thanks!

The South End also doesn't have a lot of lunch options. Any idea where you'll be? Do you want something casual or more fancy?

Pretty much in Boston proper, and can travel a bit, say North End, Cambridge, Brookline, etc
Just don't want to go too far out, like Somerville,Arlington, etc, unless it's exceptional!
Kinda looking for a place where we won't be rushed too much, either.

Not that the parking is any better in the Back Bay, but Abe & Louie's or Smith & Wollensky might be good for lunch. There's always Parrish Cafe for their interesting sandwiches. If you're in the mood for Asian, you could easiy park in Coolidge Corner and try Khao Sarn or Pho Lemongrass. Coolidge Corner Clubhouse would be quiet at that time of day if you want a burger or sandwich. Troquet downtown has their easy going lunch with nice panini but not too much on the more substantial side (on weekdays).

          A&L does a fantastic, lunch-only burger

Sel de la Terre is my favorite downtown lunch spot.

not sure what you mean by "exceptional"...

but some of my faves, besides those already mentioned: neptune oyster, no. 9 park, les zygomates, douzo. lala rokh is very different and does lunch.

Scollay Square does a great lunch. Right near the commons at 21 Beacon. http://www.scollaysquare.com/
