I've been looking around, but haven't found one yet. Am I missing somewhere?

I can't think of anything. I'm not a fan of Hama Sushi. I think the closest really good Japanese spot is for izakaya and sashimi, which is Musha on Wilshire and 4th.

Chaya on Main St and Navy in Venice is the closest thing to Japanese(/French) that comes to mind. Abbot Kinney has Shima - Yoshi's brown rice sushi is great but $$$ and hours are limited - and Wabi-Sabi - trendy, yuppy and ok.
As mentioned above, Hama - ehhh - they started sliding downhill long back, then slid even further with the new owners...

It isn't terribly close to Third, but definitely check out Yabu on Pico.

The Hump. About 1.5 miles east of Main Street at Santa Monica Airport.

                No matter how "yuppie"...

I have always had great meals at Wabi Sabi, Abbot Kinney and Venice, they also have a sweet happy hour if your hungry early.
