They don't do that anymore. They have cheap apps til 6:30 I think then again later.

There are a fair amount of deals and 1/2 off, but nothing free that I can think of.

really? when did they stop? i thought i remember being there just b4 last thanksgiving.

I'm surprised to hear this, too, as Morton's was making a big deal about the free tenderloin sandwiches when they relaunched the place after the remodelling and rechristening of the bar as "12*21" just a few weeks ago. Maybe that has come and gone already?

When I went to the reopening party, they gave out 12*21 cards saying they had app deals but no mention of free steak sandwiches. It was written in the Globe too (she even took my line about the guy drinking seltzer with as many sandwiches as he could stuff in). Maybe they're doing it again but it had changed at one point at least.

      2. Not free, but a pretty good deal nonetheless, is McCormick & Schmick's happy hour: small plates of raw oysters, steamed mussels, raw clams, chicken wings, and burgers for cheap ($2 or so a pop).

        1. What about dollar tapas at Masa? I haven't been in a while and am not sure if they are still doing this, but their regular menu is great.

$1 tapas at Masa are still on, available only if you sit in the bar. They're nothing special -- a lot of fried stuff -- but it's hard to complain at that price. As I posted a few weeks ago, they have a new chef whose work is much better than his predecesor(s).

          2. On Fridays they have free passed hors d'oeuvres in the bar area at Aujourd'hui - or at least, they did as recently as about a month ago. I haven't been since they closed the Bristol for renovations and "moved it" upstairs to Aujourd'hui (effectively closing Aujourd'hui for that period in the process). I hear both spots are open again now.

This is known as the "Bubbly Bar", runs 5:30-7p, and also offers sparklers at $10/glass.

            2. smith & wollensky does house-made potato chips and mini sirloin burgers from 5:00 to 6ish, i believe.

              1. What about that champagne lounge in the lobby of the Westin Copley? Is that still happening?

You mean Fizz Lounge? I went to check that out after a few laudatory articles in local papers a couple of months back (the Westin's PR dollars at work). I kept wandering around the lobby area near the registration desk looking for it, looking for it. I finally realized that I was in it. It looks exactly like every other public seating area in the hotel, without a sign or any visible indication that it is a lounge where food and drinks are supposed to be served. It abuts the very busy main hallway in the hotel, which has a mall-like flow of foot traffic.

We sat for about ten or twelve minutes, waiting around for a waiter to show up, and finally got a menu, a very short list of overpriced nibbles (five or six items, as I recall) and a longer list of very overpriced sparklers by the glass. We laughed, and left. Truly pitiful, the lamest excuse for a lounge I've yet seen.

Oh dear. It sounded like it could've been cool, a little soiree in the middle of everything, luring more and more impromptu guests into its mix, until all of Copley was doing the conga. Guess not.

                2. I really love the happy hour at Noir in the Charles Hotel. Nothing is free, but they have $5 sandwiches, $4 flatbreads, $3 salads, $2 skewers, and $1 desserts from 5-7pm Monday-Friday. So, for $8 plus a $10 drink, you can get an amazing salad and sandwich and enjoy it in a beautiful lounge. Yum!
