Fish Tacos - not big business

Anyone know of a fish tacos place in Cali that's not one of these huge, chain operations. I'm looking for someone or a small establishment who's making killer fish tacos and whose place/MO has a good, fun and entertaining vibe. Recs?

      ditto Taco Nazo!!!

    2. This will probably get deleted/moved anyway...

But if you're asking about L.A. fish tacos do a search and you'll find a ton of replies, most of which will point you to Tacos Baja Ensenata.

I just had awesome fish tacos at Tacos Por Favor in Santa Monica.

as fooddude37 said, you owe it to yourself to head out to east la and try out tacos baja ensenada.

Well, if you're going to HIGHly recomend the joint, you might at least tell the OP where it is (even better give it a big shout out via the website for so many obvious reasons.......):

              one word: google

        2. I just had amazing fish tacos at the orthodox fish restaurant FISH GRILL on wilshire. killer and very good.

          1. Are the Fish Grill ones fried or grilled? How much are they?

              1. Go east to my 'hood and try Tacos Baja Ensenada, the best fish tacos in town, or try the shrimp burrito. Stay for the coctel campechana, a combination fish and seafood cocktail. And then take a look around at the framed articles written about the place, including Calvin Trillin's. Go early, they close around 8pm.

                1. Tacos Baja Ensenada, Señor Fish and El Taco Nazo are the three that spring to mind -- the latter two are small, local chains (I think one has four outposts and one has eight) but the fish tacos are out of this world at all of them.

                  Tacos Baja Ensenada
5385 E. Whittier Blvd. (east of Atlantic)
                  Los Angeles, CA 90022

                  Señor Baja
9611 Garvey Ave. (east of Rosemead)
                  South El Monte, CA 91733

                  Señor Baja
701 S. Weir Canyon Rd. (south of 91 Fwy)
                  Anaheim Hills, CA 92808

                  El Taco Nazo
121 S. Beach Blvd. (and La Habra)
                  La Habra, CA 90631

                  1. Ditto, Das Ubergeek, these places are the best.

                    1. All the best tacos are at stands, so I don't know if you're going to find the entertaining vibe you're after. If you don't want to travel to east L.A., Senor Fish in Eagle Rock can be very good at times, though not always consistent. El Siete Mares on Sunset in Silver Lake is not quite up to par with the places above, but if it's convenient to you, it's worth a try.

I agree about the El Siete Mares in Sunset Silverlake but, the one in East LA on Ceasar Chavez can be very good.

                      2. Please note, the original poster is looking for great tacos anywhere in California. Since all the responses to this point have been about tacos in the greater L.A. we are retaining this thread on the L.A. board and ask that you confine your responses to tacos available in the greater L.A. area. A discussion about tacos available in the S.F. Bay Area would be appropriate for the S.F. board, and a discussion about tacos in all areas of California outside of the L.A. and S.F. areas would be appropriate for the California board.

                        Thanks.

                        1. The Fish Grill is the best. Yes, kosher and great. For non-Kosher fish tacos, try Sharky's. Their fish is grilled, fresh, and delicious. It's a smallish chain that does what they do very well.

                          1. the taco nazo in la habra. theyre perfect.

                            1. a good one to try on the westside is kay & dave's in west l.a., santa monica & the palisades. we love 'em.
