Looking for a great place to celebrate a birthday in Palm Springs...

Although it's a fun atmosphere, I wasn't that impressed by Melvyn's food - it has been awhile, but I remember piles of food heaped all together on a plate, all running together & it wasn't very appetizing. I think LV should have a higher score than 14.

Le Vallauris gets 14/20 at Gayot. Their food is continental and Melvyn's is more of a classic American steak house.

I personally haven't eaten there but Gayot gives it a 13/20 which is not bad. Its definitely old style nostalgic from reviews. From what I understand the crowd is mostly retirees (not that this is bad). I also have heard that most people dress up a bit to eat there.

It would also depend on HOW nostalgic you want to get. If you are looking for the rat pack Melvyn's is about the only place left.

How's the food at Melvyn's? Just looking for someplace with great ambience--where you can get drinks at the bar, enjoy a leisurely meal.

I ditto Le Valluris!! We went to Palm Springs from LA a few months ago for my BF's birthday and I took him to dinner here...it was terrific!!! Definitely on the $$$$ side, but it was worth it!
