Brunello vs. Ribera

Hey all,
I'm doing a nice dinner party this weekend and I'm serving a beef dish with porcini mushrooms for the main course. I have 2 wines, a 1999 Brunello from Barbi and a very good Ribera Del Duero. Since they are both intense wines, I'm not sure what order to serve them in, or if it matters at all.

Brunello then Ribera? What do you think?

    How old is the Ribera del Deuro? Who's the producer?

      First off, my first choice for your main dish would be a cabernet sauvignon as cab matches both beef and mushrooms so nicely.

      But, if it's a choice btw brunello and ribera, either would work but I'd go with the brunello probably. Ribera is a better match with pork and lamb, IMO.

      But any rich red wine will probably be fairly good with this dish.

        Thanks guys. I will definitely serve both. Just want to know which order to do it in. Maybe we should start with the Ribera.

        The Ribera is a Alonzo Del Yerro Maria from 2003. Wish it were older!

        The Brunello is a 1999 from Fattoria dei Barbi. Love it.

          First choice: serve both at the same time; 2nd choice: Brunello first.

          Personally, I serve them at the same time, in two separate glasses. That way the guests can compare both wines AND compare how each wine hits the food.

            Drink them at the same time to compare the flavors. You must decant the brunello and let it breathe for at least 2 hours for the full effect. (In Italy they say an hour per year)

              Is that one-hour-per-year just for Brunello or do the Italians apply that to all reds? I know next to nothing about wine. Thanks in advance.

                Just Brunello, and it is (I think) and exaggeration, but you still want to give it at least an hour or two. Taste a sip as you first open the bottle, and then have a sip after one hour and then after two if you have the time. By two hours it should be ready.

                  Thanks so much. That's very good to know. I had my first Brunello recently at a truffle dinner and then bought some days after but didn't decant it.....I now know...
