Brooklyn's finest: FRAGOLE

who knows Fragole on court street in carroll gardens, brooklyn? jesus, i ate there last night and i just had to post this unabashed praise. i mean, wow. every single plate we ordered was of the absolute highest quality. roasted (NOT fried) calamari was perfectly charred and tasty, all veggies were charred without being cooked to hell, my steak was perfectly med rare like i ordered, while one of the others in my party had the same steak ordered rare. side by side comparison revealed his was indeed rare as hell on the inside while mine was only slightly more cooked through - wonderful. the rack of lamb tho (which was the carne del giorno) was the absolute best. the ONLY little, teensy complaint i can possibly think of was that there wasnt a TON of lamb on the plate. but thats more my own warped sense of size (i.e. i want too much meat all the time:) ill just go and end it here but i want to highly recommend FRAGOLE to anyone who wants good, straight forward food. also, altho i didnt have any, all the pastas are homemade. that is increasingly rare.

  1. Agreed. I love many of the Italian faves in the area but will always have a great time at Fragole. They do 1/2 off wine bottles one or 2 nights a week if wine is your thing...

Always fresh, big portions, no nonsense menu. Great place.

Do you know what days the 1/2 off wine are? I went to the website and saw that they have a flat pricing of most bottles at $27 each, but didn't see anything about the half off.

Half price wine is every Tuesday night. EJC - although the place can get fairly busy it's never really crazy. I'm pretty sure they take reservations as well.

Note - the half price wine only includes their premium priced bottles, not the $27 bottles. Still it's a great deal and they have many wines in the $30 - $40 range. Perfect chance to try that Barolo you might not otherwise order.

    2. I agree as well. We do Fragole pretty much once a week. The special salads, usually some kind of fruit paired with some kind of cheese over greens is always really tasty, and I am very partial to the fetuccini rosemarino (fettuccini with italian sausage, tomato sauce and herbs). And to top it off, the people who work there are really nice. Gotta love Fragole.

      1. How busy do they get on 1/2 price wine night?

We've been meaning to go forever and that seems like the perfect opportunity.

        1. you should not have too much trouble just walking in. although the reviewer raved about the entrees, don't forget the pastas as they are all great. if you're in the mood, the lasagna is one of a kind; it comes in a individual crock and is a piping hot, delicious dish for this weather, very sweet, too. enjoy

We’ve enjoyed Fragole a lot more then the much touted Frankie’s across the street. We liked Frankie’s, but it wasn’t worth the 35 – 45 minute wait IMO. Fragole seemed a bit more laid back and had a nice charm to it. We passed, but saw desert after desert popping through the dining area – can anyone recommend anything in particular?

I don't think they have a huge dessert menu, but everything they do is well executed. The creme brule and tiramisu are fine (although I'm not a huge tiramisu fan) but the thing to go for is the special dessert of the night which is almost always fantastic - any kind of chocolate truffle cake or cheesecake is usually really really good.

if you're into tiramisu, Fragole's is pretty solid. we often get an order or two to go for a nice snack at home. worth a try.

My wife really likes the panna cotta, pretty decent serving for the price as well.

              2. Sadly, we haven't ever eaten IN Frgaole's yet. But, when they first opened my wife brought home a menu and we ordered in. I have never had better Italian food delivered. Every time, the food still arrives how and fresh and flavorful. I don't know why the handful of excellent delivery meals haven't prompted us to venture over yet, but we will.

Matt: I'm slightly embarrassed to say that most of our experiences have been delivery as well. In fact had delivery last night. But I agree, hands down the best delivery in the hood, delivered as if it just came out of the kitchen which no doubt it did. Had the bolognese (with spaghetti instead of rigatoni which they substituted with no problem). Awesome.
