Now that it's finally getting a little chilly in NYC...I stopped in at Verandah Deli (the little red take-out place next to Cobble Hill park, on Clinton St near Warren in Cobble Hill) for hot chocolate. The best I've had in NYC...and just $1.50 for a small (i.e., normal coffee-cup-size)! Real Valhrona chocolate, frothed up with whole milk--thick, delicious, not too sweet.

And not so ungodly rich that you can't finish it--I like Jacques Torres' version OK, but it's way too rich for me to get to the bottom of even a small cup.

Your hot chocolate thoughts, hounds?

I happen to love Torres' Wicked Hot Chocoloate, but it is a bit pricey. We recently had an Italian hot chocolate in D'Amico's on Court and Degraw. It was excellent. But, be careful. They have two hot chocolate dispensers. One, is run of the mill stuff and the other is the real deal, with a machine constantly whipping real chocolate.

I love d'Amico, but I'm just not keen on that Italian HC. It always strikes me as being like a cup of hot Hershey's syrup!

Sweet Melissa's is tasy, if unremarkable. I think Tea Lounge has some HC bells and whistles, but I don't know any more than that, not being a fan of the spot.

So far, the best hot chocolate I've had in the slope is at Cocoa Bar. I've also tried the stuff at the chocolate room, and while pretty good, Cocoa Bar is definitely my favorite (particularly the mint.)

Torres' hot chocolate is sinfully amazing to the point that it can almost be too intense.

Jacques Torres on Water Street in Dumbo has the best I've found. It's $2.50, but it's so good, it's worth it.

In the warmer months, they make "Iced Hot Chocolate" which is as good as the hot chocolate.

I never tried the hot chocolate, but most of the food @ the red deli is better then average, a bit more gourmet then your traditional NY-style deli. Don’t forget to try their prepared foods and soups. The owner also owns Nova Café, which is decent, on Warren & Court.
