The Brothers Moon - A review

  • 3

My two best friends and I ate at The Brothers Moon in Hopewell last Friday. We enjoyed the experience quite a bit.

Two of us had the kabocha squash soup, which was garnished with sage and brown butter. It was creamy and light at the same time and the perfect thing for a damp and drizzly evening. My other friend ordered what seemed like a standard salad--arugula, balsamic vinaigrette, pine nuts and roasted pepper--but was eagerly chasing the last leaves with her fork, despite the generous size of the portion.

That same friend also ordered the horseradish-crusted salmon dish, and again finished her plate. Actually, all three of us cleaned our plates. I had the lamb loin with walnut and spinach pesto, which was done to perfection. It was tender and flavorful. It was accompanied by a butternut squash risotto that was absolutely delicious as well as a few pieces of diced turnip that were unexpectedly tasty. The dish also came with roasted broccoli, which I had never had before. It was good, but I don't think broccoli is best prepared that way. My other friend ordered the scallop dish, but the kitchen was out of scallops--with her ok, they prepared it with shrimp instead. She enjoyed the actual shrimp but was most delighted by the potato latke that it was served over (she is a big potato fan).

Dessert was also lovely. I had the chocolate mousse which came with a crescent moon-shaped shortbread cookie and a piece of white chocolate, plus a drizzling of raspberry sauce. The varied elements definitely dressed up an old standby. If my friend who had wanted scallops was disappointed by getting shrimp, her chocolate bread pudding more than made up for it. The bread pudding was rich without being overwhelming, and the spiced orange slices that came with it were a delicious accent. My other friend had the apple spice cake with cream cheese frosting, one of the dessert specials, which she found delicious.

The only complaint for the evening was that the service was extremely slow. We were there for nearly three hours, and the place was not THAT busy. On the other hand, it was nice not to be rushed for a change and we had no place to be, so we did enjoy the opportunity for extended conversation.

  1. I'm still trying to figure out why we had such an mediocre meal there a few months ago when people on here and people I know in real life seem to enjoy it so much.

I wrote a review of our experience back in November, but I can't find it when I do a search.

    1. Sarah your review was actually a REPLY to MY review hehehehe, scroll down.

Thank you!! I was wondering why the moderators would have deleted my review - there goes my conspiracy theory. :)

I'm really sad that everyone here has had such great experiences at Brothers Moon while ours was so lackluster.
