State College

I have a friend living in State College with a birthday coming up. I'd like to treat her and her boyfriend to a good meal. Any ideas? I'm not from the area and have no idea what the dining is like. I want to stay away from chains.

If you do a search on here, you'll find some good suggestions; there was a small thread back in November that I agree with completely. By "good meal" do you mean fancy, or just good food? The only fancy place I've been to in town is Zola New World Bistro, and the food was terrific (but it wasn't cheap). We're also fond of Spatz. The Tavern is nice and cozy, but I wasn't impressed with the food.

In the "terrific food but a bit less ambiance" category, I'd recommend Otto's (good beer, too), Herwig's (Austrian with attitude), and Mad Mex.

I'd second Zola. It's been a few years since I was there, but it was excellent.

I'll have to look for that thread, thanks. It doesn't have to be fancy, just good food and a somewhat nice ambiance.
