One if by Land is one of the nicest rooms in town. Very romantic. The food is decent but not memorable, particularly at the high prices.

Fraunces is a pre-Revolutionary-War building with low ceilings, creaky floors, etc. George Washington went there. You go, once, for the experience. It's loud, yuppified and expensive, with well below average food.

Is there are particular reason you are interested in One if by Land? I ask only because if there is not - like - my mother loves this place and insists I take her there etc. - I would stay away. Yes, the room is beautiful - so is the room at La Grenouille, for example, and for the price/food quality ratio, I'd go to La Grenouille any day.

To me, feeling that I'm eating mediocre food at high prices is not particularly romantic - more depressing, actually.

MMRuth: Good question:

I remember going there as a kid with my parents I guess when they finally could afford it. They considered it big time...being Alexander Hamiltons[?] house yada yada.

i guess i thought about going back for nostalgia reasons.

My thought then would be - go for a drink at the bar - a glass of champagne or something - and try to check out the food if you can from there etc. Annisa next door has, IMHO, wonderful food, so you could combine the excursion! Or, check it out, if you can, for a restaurant week dinner through January, which will only set you back $35.

(I think it might have been Aaron Burr's carriage house.)

it was aaron burr's and annisa is the only place on that block worth your money.

fraunces tavern is like eating at a bad museum. the bar next door is a total suburban sports bar with hot bartender to boot. avoid it completely.

obviously, the original poster is seeking some old school restaurants to visit. i suggest keens for steaks, mcsorley's for some beers, and possibly even corner bistro for old school village style.

Since Fraunces Tavern is one of the few places in the FD that is reasonably priced I've had a ton of lunches there. While the food isn't great by any stretch I'd say certain things on the menu are tasty. I find the seafood cob salad to be very good and some of the sandwiches are decent but overpriced. For history I think the place is great and if you want to get out of the cold while walking around the FD/ seeing the Statue of Liberty I'd check it out but wouldn't go out of my way to get there.

As others have said, McSorleys is far better for history.
