Maiko Sushi [moved from a discussion on Food & Media News board]

Actually, we were thinking of going to Maiko on Bernard a few days ago, while I was in town visiting my daughter. I posted a query on Chowhound about it, but ended up at Jun-l on Laurier. We hadn't expected Italianate Japanese food, so we were caught off guard. The food was okay and the place was packed. What's your opinion of Jun-l? Do you think it deserves the accolades it's been getting?

  1. Yes I knew you were thinking of going to Maiko Bernard(always checking the CH Montreal board). Regarding June-I restaurant, I have never eaten there, but I thought is was more French-influenced Japanese food(it's definitely not pure Japanese food). They usually have two different tasting menus, last I heard? The one Japanese restaurant that I really liked & it's also on Bernard West, but it's based on only one visit & I was recommended to order certain dishes is Oishii Sushi at 277 Bernard West(just east of Parc). Can't remember for certain what I ordered, but I believe it was grilled black cod & whitefish carpaccio. One or both of these dishes, are not even listed on their menu. Check it out.

Thanks, BLM. I'll give it a try on our next visit.

Beware Oishii Sushi is open for dinner only(from 5:30 pm). The dishes I mentioned I've never seen anywhere else in Montreal before.
