If you are looking for a little hole-in-the-wall Mexican place, try Jalapenos on 21st street between N and O in midtown Sac. Ricardo and his wife opened the place about 8 years ago and serve great food (really it's ALL good - since I used to work across the street I tried everything on the menu). My mom is Mexican, and we used to live next door to her family in L.A. Jalapeno's tastes just like that - OK so maybe I'm spoiled. Jalapeno's also serves a daily special, and beer, if your in the mood. Just a warning, it gets really busy at noon, so be ready to wait about 10-15 minutes.

My vote has to go to Tres Hermanas in Midtown Sacramento. I love their mole sauce - especially on chicken enchiladas. The carnitas are also very good. Chips and salsa are always crispy and fresh. I do not care for the Chile Relleno, but everything else has always been very close to my favorite places in Arizona. The patio is awesome, but not when it is freezing outside! Entrees come with soup or salad (go for the house cilantro dressing!) which are always tasty.
My favoite is the Chile Verde Burrito Y Enchilada del Pollo con Mole. It is so big and so good that I have to roll out of there. I do not know much about their desserts since Rick's Dessert Diner is just a block away!

Just read the posting about Xochimilco on El Camino, I went there a few times because it is in my neighborhood.
Now in their place is Las Pupusas, they serve El Salvadorian food. I saw a review in the Bee in the recent past and tried it out. I liked it, have never had Pupusas, went back several times for more. No atmosphere and a loud radio station, so I get the Pupusas to go... -
I recently found Pancho's Mexican Grill located on Stockton Blvd. and 13th Ave. It is Jalisco Style food and I found it to be yummy and authentic, tiny place, little athmosphere but great Posole and Burritos and Tacos. Have not tried everything out yet but plan to go back real soon. I think this place is worth a try for you.

I like to recommend Xochimilco, which is out on Auburn Blvd. at College Park (near Madison). They make outstanding homemade tortillas, strong margaritas, a chorizo-heavy queso fundido, and have a generally friendly, casual atmosphere. The chimichanga is to die for, they deep fry it longer than most places, and since it is made with their homemade flour tortillas, it is absolutely decadent.
I don't know what type of mexican you are looking for, Xochi is more american-mexican than a taco stand or birria place, but I grew up in San Diego and IMHO Xochi puts most other Sacramento places to shame.
