Singapore Old Town Cafe - Dublin

I had a lunch at Singapore Old Town Cafe in Dublin, CA. It's located in the new mall complex near Tassajara and Dublin Blvd.

When we arrived around noon time, the place had 3 tables occupied, as the lunch progress, almost all tables were taken. Our orders were delivered within reasonable time frame, in about 10-15 minutes, pretty good for a new restuarant that just opened few days ago.

We ordered :
- roti cannai
- sambal sotong
- nasi lemak
- singaporean tofu

Roti Cannai, the roti was a bit sticky, not as crispy as I'd like it to be. The dipping sauce was pretty good.

My wife saw the Sambal Sotong in the menu; Sambal Sotong is calamari cooked over spicy / chili Malay sauce. I'd rate this one as a bit above average. The calamari wasn't as tender as we'd like it. As we tend to like more flavorful spices and spicy, we found the sauce wasn't as flavorful we'd like it to be and wasn't as spicy as we'd like it. I guess they may have toned it down a bit. It'd be much better if they didn't toned down the spices. The best Sambal Sotong we ever had in US was at Malay Satay Hut in Redmond, WA.

I usually order Nasi Lemak whenever I'm in a new Singaporean restaurant. I'd say it's a pretty good one. The only negative comment I had was the chicken bones pieces in parts of the sauce, making it a bit harder to eat.

Singapore tofu was a bit wierd to me; the description sounds good, but I didn't like the taste. It's a tofu that's stuffed meat inside, and you dipped it in a sweet-chili dipping sauce. Another table ordered a tofu meals that looks like a "tahu campur" (Indonesian dish, tofu deep-fried, and add sprouts and vegetables topping on top of the tofu along with spicy peanut / belachan sauce). That one looks good, I'll need to try it next time.

Overall, it's pretty good; it'd be much better if the spices a bit more bold, especially for Sambal Sotong...

Their website is www.otcafe.com.

It's good to see these new Asians restaurants in Dublin Pleasanton area... I believe this is the only Singaporean restaraunt in this area.
