Italian in a small boutique hotel

Last time I was in Your Fair City the concierge at the Handlery sent me to a wonderful Italian restaurant which was on the ground floor of a boutique hotel. It was a few blocks west and north of Union Square. Was surprised at both the prices and quality (I usually mistrust concierges).

Hoping SF Hounds will be able to help a Philly hound with the name (or any other suggestions you might have that are within walking distance of the Mark Hopkins).

Thanks!

Are you sure about this? Did the cable car line run directly in front of the restaurant/hotel you are thinking of?

Scala's Bistro is a good restaurant, but it is a large restaurant and the Sir Francis Drake is hardly a boutique hotel. The Powell Street cable car line runs right in front of the hotel.

There is a small Italian restaurant called Fino in the boutique St. Andrews Hotel in the 600 block of Post Street, which is 3 blocks west of Union Square.

Yikes! Not on the cable car line, and I'm pretty sure it was on Post, so it was Fino, in the St Andrews. But hey, the thread has given me some great ideas, plus the right restaurant!

Scala's Bistro maybe is adjacent to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel?
If not this is a great old time sf favorite.

Go to Bar Crudo- excellent tiny place with good crudo, raw fish, small plates.
Hidden Vine - Small cozy wine Bar
Farmer Brown- Modern Soul Food, don't let the neighborhood scare you.

Sounds like Scala's in the Sir Francis Drake...

The old chef from Scala's is now at Perbacco.

Staffan Terje left Scala's at the end of September 2005. I think the new chef started last summer, after they were closed for remodeling.
