Ovelia Report

  • 3

I tried Ovelia, the new Greek place on 30th ave and 34th Street in Astoria last week. Overall the experience was good, definitely a major step above the other Greek Cafe type places on 30th ave as far as food goes.

The Good:
The homemade sausage appetizer was excellent, the pork sausage was sliced, and each piece was crispy yet tender with great lemony-thyme flavor.

The Pita/Bread basket they brought to each table was warm and fresh with olive oil and herbs, but many places in the area do just as well, this certainly isn't a unique thing.

My entree, the ground beef and lamb dish with fries was very good. It was served over a hot pita with tzatziki sauce. It wasn't haute cuisine but it tasted great. I've also heard that their grilled fish and meat is excellent and that they buy the fish from nearby Marino's.

The service was friendly and prompt, no issues at all which is somewhat surprising for such a new place. They even gave us a complementary dish of hot, fresh loukamades for desert, which were decent, but I haven't eaten them much so don't have much basis for comparison. They tasted great to me though.

The Bad:
My wife's salad was huge but pretty awful. Wet shredded iceberg lettuce with a few olives, some chunks of feta and a bunch of green peppers. They really should do better, this is the one area where they were no better than Avenue Cafe. Simply swapping the watery iceberg for some baby spinach would improve the salad immensely.

Overall:
I am glad to have another choice in the neighborhood (and a REAL Greek restaurant on 30th ave) and I look forward to going back when I have a little more of a budget to spend. Hopefully they can keep up the good and improve on the bad. I wasn't too impressed by the decor (though the tables were cool), and the music was a little loud but it didn't detract from the food.

I have heard favorable reviews so far and look forward to trying it!

    1. Great report! Just curious though, how were the prices? Also, nice to know about the Marino's connection.

Prices were decent, maybe a little higher than I expected. The ground lamb and beef dish was about $13-$14, the sausage appetizer was about $8. Fish and other grilled items were around $20 and the lousy salad was $9 I think. We got out of there for about $75 including tip with 3 people, including 2 drinks, 2 entrees, 1 appetizer and 1 salad.
