Ice Cream Sundaes
Is there any place in NYC to get an old-fashioned banana split or other sundae-type frozen treat? Ideally, the place should be able to accommodate a larger group of people. If no old-fashioned-type places exist, I'd settle for someplace that just makes great sundaes.

I think Blue Ribbon Bakery in the West Village has what you are looking for.

if you're willing to head to queens...eddie's sweet shop is outstanding! it has been there since the early 1900s, family owned. homemade ice cream, old fashioned setting. wow is it good!
there's a movie theater next door...the cinemart so maybe hit a movie then head over to eddie's. it's a landmark and the ice cream is a real treat!
best hot fudge sundae from the village voice 2003.

Eddie's is definitely the real thing. Great high-fat whipped cream, too!

i remember the grandfather coming up from the basement over and over with the bowls of whipped cream!
sadly, he died, but it's still in the family and still the same cream.

i think the soda shop on chambers st in tribeca may fit the bill.

Hmm, the Soda Shop looks promising. Do you think they can accommodate 15 people? How's the food/ice cream?

i think the soda shop can accommodate a group your size, but i'd call ahead if i were you to make sure. by contrast, lex candy shop definitely can't handle a larger group unless it's split between several booths. if your group were smaller, it would have been a solid choice. and eddie's in queens would've been perfect if you were looking outside of manhattan.
as for the offerings at the soda shop:
while the food is good enough for what it is (albeit nothing spectacular), the desserts and soda fountain drinks are the main attraction.

The Soda Shop makes amazing Black and White milkshakes. However, I would definitely call ahead and reserve a table for such a large group. The space is pretty small and it fills up quickly.

Thanks. I spoke with the Soda Shop, and it turns out that they recently added a back room to accommodate large groups. It should work out well. Thanks for all of the suggestions.

Serendipity 3 is the classic (albeit upscale) NYC ice cream shop (also has a restaurant and gift shop). A group may be tough though, but you can always call.

Second Lexington Candy Shop and Soda Shop. Both have really old-school feel. Just pick the one that is more convenient for you.

Skip Serendipity's; it's really not all it's cut out to be. The frozen hot chocolate was surprisingly more icy than chocolatey. Lexington Candy Shop is definitely delicious, but their other menu items aren't so much.

Little Pie Company--not a lot of variety on the ice cream front, but a lot of the standard old-fashioned treats.

It's not as old fashioned, but certainly in the old fashioned parfait glass and can have caramel ribbons and shelled peanuts or other toppings in it, Danny Meyer's Blue Smoke has some nice selections for sundaes.
