RED/BLACK THEMED PARTY- WHAT DO I SERVE?

So Im hosting a party (not a dinner party) which is going to be black/red themed. Its not a dinner party, and my guests are definetly not 'chowhounds', so I just want to serve a few munchies for snacking on. Nothing fancy or pretencious that will make me look like i 'tried too hard' haha. Simple, yummy, and maybe if it could relate to my theme, that would be good. Any ideas?

    Squid ink ravioli with cherry tomato slices on a toothpick?

    Pumpernickle bread with some nice red spread, maybe roasted bell pepper?

    EDIT: dish of black olives. :) Or, better yet, just some kind of black olive spread.

    Black and red caviar?

      I love the red & black caviar idea! If they are truly not CHers, put the caviar on a trisket :)

      Sushi rolls wrapped in nori (black) topped with red caviar and black sesame seeds

      Black bean hummus w/red tortilla chips

      roasted red peppers, rolled around black olives & stuck w/ a toothpick

      core cherry tomatoes & stuff w/ black olive tapenade

      slice cooked red bliss potatoes and top w/ same tapenade

      black grapes in a red bowl!

      black (i.e. 'russian') bread w/ sundried tomato spread (or roasted red pepper spread)

        Strawberries dipped in dark chocolate - with the lights low, the chocolate might look sufficiently "black".

        If you have flowers to accent the decor, anthiriums in a black vase would be nice. Those are those flattish, leaf shaped flowers with the thingie protuding out of the middle. (Please excuse the lack of botanical terms - I'm a foodie, not a botanist!)

              if i were to use something with chocolate and some type of red fruit, what would be the LEAST messy and MOST simple thing to pick up and shove in your mouth. I mean, I doubt anyone is going to take the time to pick up a napkin, most people will just pass by the snack table and pick up something

            Sacher torte (dark chocolate) with a raspberry coulis, perhaps.

            roasted eggplant rounds topped with a little whipped feta cheese and marinated tomatoes

            roasted beets

            radish salad

            pink is red, so maybe some poached salmon dressed with sesame aioli and topped with black sesame seeds

            make sure you do bring some color to the table, though...

                  black and white cookies, but make the white red

                  red velvet cake (or cupcakes) with dark chocolate icing

                  chocolate - raspberry cake

                  mini pizzas - red could be the sauce, pepperoni, red peppers, and for black, black olives

                    What great suggestions. You could perhaps get a cheap (or washable) checkerboard and put some small red things on black squares and vice versa.

                    And a couple bowls of red and black licorice placed around the room for sweet nibbles.

                        pumpernickel points with lox, creme freche and black lumpfish roe as garnish.

                        roasted beet salad.

                          are there such thing as BLACK tortilla chips?? (b/c then i could do red with black bean dip, and black with salsa)

                            Yes! They're black bean tortilla chips. they have a seasoned salt on them; they're GREAT. You can get them at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods. Maybe even at Safeway/Pavilions. They're not as sturdy as your typical tortilla chip, so they would be better for picking up salsa.

                          1) Mini or regular-sized pizzas w/a simple tomato sauce, topped with boccocini mozzarella, sliced kalamata olives, sundried tomatoes, chopped onyx basil, and hot genoa salame.

                          2) For plating/serving - you can spread lovely little black beans/peppercorns, red lentils, or pink peppercorns down on top of a serving platter that has a modest lip, and then place your non-sticky finger-food appetizers on top of them.

                          3) Beverages - Cosmopolitans, and for those non-alcoholics Shirley Temples.

                          4) Flower arrangement - In a clear glass tall trumpet vase, arrange an assortment of lots of red flowers, fillers, and stalk (e.g., red roses, red peonies, sprays of red pepper berries, etc.). Before filling w/ water, fill fresh blueberries into the vase 1/2 way so that you can see them through the vase (between the stems and the glass). Fill the remaining w/ water. You may even want to put a couple drops of bleach into the water so that the berries don't create a germy mess soo quickly. You can even tie a lovely wide black satin ribbon around the vase, place some pretty black feathers into the arrangement, or wire-in some black and red costume masks for more flair.

                          5) Olives for sampling - using several of the same dishes, or a dish w/ several dividers, you can get a bunch of different black olives to put into each dish/section.

                          6) Black peppercorn crusted beef fillet cooked to medium rare, sliced into 1/2 inch thick pieces - place a few small slices and its jus on top of mashed red potatoes served inside a martini glass.

                                        HA,

                                        You can get flatbreads and dips (sundried tomato and olive tapenade) from any Loblaws. Their presidents choice (PC) brand seem to be pretty good and reasonably priced. super simple. you might want to brush the bread with EVOO and serve hot.

                                        But if I were invited I would make some special icecream for you like coca-cola(should come out blackish) and cimmamon heart (should come out reddish pink). maybe even go all MG and make vanilla looking icecream that tasted of red and black licorice.

                                            A looong time ago I saw a cute hors d'oeuvre idea using shapes cut out of thin breads with those canape cutters - the shapes were the four symbols for the playing card suits.

                                            They were then spread with something and dipped in red or black caviar to match.

                                            I have no idea what the spread was and I'm not familiar with caviar (I'm veg), so I'm not sure what would go. Suggestions?

                                                If you are looking for those cut shapes, call your local Michaels or JoAnn's craft store. They may carry them in their cake decorating aisle in the Wilton's section.
                                                Also, if you are wanting the single color M&M's, I know that my local CVS Store carries them for $4.99 per bag.

                                                  Try cookie cutters. Many cooking shops like Sur La Table or Williams-Sonoma carry many many shapes of cookie cutters. Sur La Table has a huge canape cutting set but it is about $150. You can probably get cookie cutters for a couple bucks each.

                                                Not finger food, but it could work... red lentil and black forbidden rice salad... with other non-colored mix-ins and seasoning.

                                                Stuffed beets

                                                There is black pasta available with marinara

                                                Stuffed shiitake mushrooms... or something else with them

                                                Portabella mushrooms caps grilled w/ a "hidden layer" of cheese, topped with checca or a tomato concoction

                                                Skewers of grilled veggies... red peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, mushrooms

                                                Black and Red Licorice Bites

                                                Tortilla Bites... those black tortilla chips with a hidden dose of cheese topped with black beans and salsa

                                                        A black or red bucket (rubbermaid has a great selection of cherry red) filled with ice and offering glass bottles of Jones sodas--Vanilla Coke is jet black and Cherry and Sugar-Free Black Cherry as well as Strawberry Lime are nicely red. Throw in red and black beers. Or offer Opal Nera sambuca or chambord afterward?

                                                          There's a black vodka on the market called Blavod - not sure how available it is, but I've seen it in my local store.

                                                          The Blavod vodka web site has a drink where you float the vodka over cranberry juice - thus achieving red and black in the same drink!

                                                                You can always use food coloring if you were making a dip or something like that.
