Hi there Chowhounds. I'm on a quest to finding Hawaiian Ice, the REAL kind they have in Hawaii and tastes more like snow rather than granular grainy ice pebbles. The type where a whole block of ice (3 to 4 inches thick) is shaved and topped with syrup, condensed milk, red beans, etc.

I've tried the shaved ice at the Ten Ren in College Park, but it was too granular. I've heard that Temari Cafe in Rockville has shaved ice. Does anyone know if it's the block ice one or anywhere else in the area which might have it?

Thanks!

I am guessing that this isn't going to help at this time of year but if you're still on the quest when the weather gets warm, I have often seen what purports to be a Hawaiian shave ice cart outside the Barnes and Noble in Bethesda. (Have never tried it but I wouldn't know the difference anyway.)

I've never tried the iced desserts at Temari but I know what you mean by the ice normally being too granular. In Malaysia/Singapore their shaved ice is the same snowy texture like Hawaiian ice. But I can tell you that the machine to grate the ice at Temari is the same one i've seen used in Asia so maybe they will have the texture that you're looking for.

There are quite a few Asian places that serve this dish, it is not unique to any one ethnicity. I think the best version I've tried is at Bob's Noodles 66 in Rockville, but I have seen it elsewhere. It is not granular at Bob's.

Man, I'm from Hilo, and all I can say is: give up hope. Nobody here have da kine shave ice, braddah. Like da ono kine they make in Hawai'i.

What we need here is a Cafe 100, or any place wit' decent Loco Moco's! But I know beddah than to hope.
