great basque food in nyc

any suggestions? thanks in advance.

  1. My favorite's in Newark, and while most of the food isn't specifically Basque, the owner and (I think) the chef are, and the food IS great.

    1. I think Euzkadi in the East Village is great, and they have a 21 buck early bird special.

      1. I'm not super familiar with Basque food but I went to Urena recently and enjoyed it and was told by another chowhound that it's the closest to Basque food that you can get in NYC.

        1. How authentic it is to Basque, I cannot say, but we enjoy Pintxos and it claims to be Basque. It's on Greenwich St. just north of Canal.

          1. Pintxos is the Basque word for Tapas, but Xavier, the chef/owner of PIntxos is not, as far as I know, Basque. The place is really good, with excellent pintxos and a very good wine list.

            And talk about luck. When he first opened, the area was pretty dead. Now there are three multi-story condo buildings within a block and a half.

            As for true Basque food in New York, I don't think there really is any. Not of the type you find in Bilbao or San Sebastien.

            If you have the energy, Casa Vasca in Newark is good, as is the bigger Iberia, on the main street. But, again, not like in Bilbao, where the hake in olive oil, with slow roast potatoes, is the best I've tasted anywhere in the world.
