La Bonne Soupe, on 55th St., b/t 5th & 6th Avs., is a pleasant, family-friendly French bistro with lots more on the menu than just good soups, including fondues.
For Italian near the theater, Le Zie is on 7th Av., b/t 20th & 21st Sts. I've not been, but it's very popular with many Hounds.

re: few
Le Zie might not be best for 7.
Grand Sichuan International on 24th and 9th oven has family groups. Excellent Szechuan food (although they do have Chinese American items for the less adventurous).
R.U.B., BBQ on 23rd between 7th & 8th can handle 7, I think.
There is a Persian restaurant called Pars on (I think) 27th St. between 7th & 8th. None of their food moves.
You might also like the old style Spanish Restaurant, El Quijote also on 23rd between 7th & 8th.
