Couchez in Santa Barbara - totally trashed
Review by Amy Wong in Santa Barbara News Press "Scene" totally trashed Couchez - she gave it the lowest possible rating which I have never seen given to any establishment and a scathing review about poor choices, bad food, and even worse service and attitude.
As is her tradition, she goes back a second time to be sure she did not hit a bad night, except the second night she did not get served at all -totally ignored while it appeared all the staff action was in the "private dining room". They did not even try to sell her a tarted-up overpriced drink.
The whole concept of dining on beds seemed so un-Santa Barbara that I originally gave it 6 months sight unseen. Looks like it will dry up and hopefully go away in even less.
I guess I give them credit for trying something "new" and "creative".... but something about it just seemed to cater to the twenty-something wannabee-urban-hipster "attitude" crowd. I shouldn't say that without having tried it, but there's a lot of downtown "attitude" that I just can't abide by in the downtown SB cocktail scene. I wonder if anyone can make that south of the freeway site work -- it's been a revolving door for the past ten years. A nightclub seems like a good idea. Maybe Couchez is packed on weekends though and actually successful??

The chi-chi attitude of too much in Santa Barbara dining is driving me to Old Town Ventura for more honest dining experiences. The restaurant reviewer I do believe also went on a weekend night. Maybe all the "action" is in the back room and you are right -that is one dead location. I don't expect anything to make a go there. Sadly, just like the Hungry Cat site on Anapamu and Chapala - nothing clicks there though there is a new Tapas restaurant opened across the street on West Anapamu that looked well attended the other night. That kind of slipped in with no fan-fare.

Is the new tapas place in the location formerly "Eclectico" (pizzeria owned by same folks as l'Ombretta)? Interesting.
Is the Hungry Cat still coming? I'm not waiting with bated breath since it seems kind of pricey & LA-chi-chi for me ($9 clam chowder??), but I'm curious if it will ever open.

There has been a lot of construction work going on at the alleged Hungry Cat Anapamu/Chapala site, but the windows are papered over so it hard to tell what or how far along this project is. The Tapas place is in the Eclectio site.

Any idea of the name of this new Tapas place? I'll drive by at some point, but I'm looking for further info and can't find anything...
