Going to be up in SF for a b-day dinner soon and wanted to see if I could get any feedback on pluses/minuses of Ame vs. Slanted Door. Always appreciate the help of fellow Chowhounders.

We had my wife's birthday dinner at Ame and couldn't have been happier. It was simply outstanding, quality, service, everything. We can't wait to go back. It's a beautiful room.

Very different environments/eating experiences AME is definitely more intimate. Slanted Door is a bit loud (open kitchen/seating close to others) with amazing views of the Bay. Personally I prefer the food at Slanted Door - it is truly off the charts. AME is a bit too rich and exotic for my taste. Check out both web site menus if you haven't already. If you want a dinner that you will remember for the rest of your life, try to get into Gary Danko. For all the restaurants mentioned, you will need reservations WELL in advance!

Ame. It's more intimate, more refined. I wouldn't call it "rich" at all unless sashimi is considered rich. Slanted Door is loud, less refined. Food is still good however.

I like Slanted Door's food okay except that it is a bit on the sweet side for me. It is also VERY bright and very loud.

Ame is intimate, dark, and the food is spectacular.

No brainer if those are your only two choices.

I would add that Coi seems to be off-radar and is equally fabulous!

Ame has actually succeeded in having excellent sashimi as well as a diverse menu featuring california and euro influenced dishes. It's a unique place that has no comparision in the city. Slanted door is great but given the wait and the noise I'll go with Ame any day.

Hope you enjoy Ame, definitely try the Staff Meal appetizer which is a signature dish from the chef.

Absolutely Ame. It is very special and very good, also a nice atmosphere for a birthday dinner. I loved all the fish appetizers and I second the recommendation of Lissa's Staff Dish from the appetizer list.

I found all the food at Ame slimy. Went twice. Odd but true.
