Delray Beach Recommendations
My best old Friend will be in town in February, performing at the Delray Beach Garlic Festival. We're going to have one night together away from the band and festival and I want to treat him to a nice dinner.
Any recommendations. We both worked together in Japan for 10 years, so a high end Japanese )please, no teppan style places with Filipino's tossing chunks of food in the air and slapping their spatulas on the furniture)or upscale seafood places would be nice. Are there any Spanish, Argentinian, or Brazilian places in the area?
I've even considered doing a 180, going completely kitschy and taking him to Mai-Kai. Something about being served by "luscious sarong clad maidens" sounds fun, but is the food any good?
We're eating lunch at Shorty's down near Dadeland, so a late evening dinner is what I'm looking for.
Thanks fellow foodies!

There is no serious fine dining in Delray. Sadly, 32 East is the best you'll find as far as food and atmosphere. Average sushi at all spots: Kyoto, Blu Fish and Yama, Sake Room is useless. Lemongrass does a good job. Perhaps Sushi Jo on PGA, Sushi Blues in Hollywood, Nobu or Bond St. in Miami, Echo Palm Beach . . .

Thanks to those who replied. Last time I found myself in Delray at 10:00 pm looking for something to eat I felt stranded.
I see not much has changed. Since I don't have time to get my innoculations in order, I'm going to have to skip North Beach for now. But I will keep Hiro's on my list for next time I leave the U.S. (a little humor for those who like that sort of thing).
After much research, I think we'll head over to to Chima for dinner. Meat, glorious meat!

I thought chowhounding was about finding little unexpected delightful places serving delicious food. Everyone knows 32 East (the best in town).
But for a real treat go to "Mediterranean Grill/Kebab" It is the next major street south of Atlantice (corner of Linton and US1 next to the movie theater). It is actually Turkish and better than any food I had in my recent trip to Turkey (Istanbul, Kayseri/Bodrum/Kurdistan).
In true chowhound style everythin gi sserved with love. I am goin there for Beyti now (spicy lamb)

Downshift your expectations for high end in Delray Beach. First North Miami is about 1 hour drives from Delray and I do not know where "Dadeland" is.
Atlantic Ave is the main drag running from A1A atthe beach west. The first ten blocks from the beach (where the Marriott hotel is located) is where you will find the restos with a few exceptions.
On Atlantic, City Oyster and 32 East are two of our favorites and we went to La Cigale on SE 5th (2 blocks south of Atlantic) which was really good. Sonoma Bistro came highly recommended but the sous chef quit a few weeks ago when we were there and it was horrible.
Other than that, the pickings are slim

Dadeland is a shopping mall down by U/M. Shorty's is a very popular BBQ place down in that area. Hopefully BKHuna didn't go all that distance from Delray for some Q. He could have just gone to that dumpy little shack on the RR tracks in Boynton!
Dada is my favortite option for late-night dining in Delray. Here I'm talking after say 10 or even 11PM. Basically at that point you have DaDa - or the bars that serve food (Bostons, Brus, Falcon House).

Troy's is the Q shack in Boynton, I was there on Sunday night for the rib dinner. I think Troy is cheating a little as I did not see the telltale pink smoke ring and there was an awful lot of sauce on the ribs. They were good ribs and the mac& cheese and collard greens were excellent. The place really has character!

For very good late-night Japanese, try Hiro's Yakko San in North Miami Beach. A search on this board will yield several posts praising the place. Here's one: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/35049...
