Trying something new today in the crockpot...

I'm having some people over today for the Chiefs-Colts game (go Chiefs) and decided to do some pulled pork. I looked at some recipes and have combined a couple to try something new. I seasonend the pork well with kosher salt and pepper then seared it really well in some olive oil on the stove to get it very browned. Put sliced onion in the crock-pot, laid the pork on top of that, poured a bottle of Guinness over that, along with a little chicken broth and some fresh orange juice. I also put in the orange halves that I squeezed the juice from. Cooked on high for 1 hour and now it's all on low until ready to serve.

Keeping my fingers crossed! I'm expecting it to be good. I'll shred it, and then have some BBQ sauce on the side. Do you think boiling down the beer/broth/juice would be an OK "jus" for the meat as well? Or should I just throw that away?

  1. Why not serve both? Some folks don't like bbq sauce, myself included, and might appreciate the au jus alternative.

      That's what I was thinking, too. My hubby loves BBQ sauce. I prefer the meat just moistened with its juices. Thanks for confirming what I was thinking. :)

    2. It should taste fine. Just taste it for salt when you take out the meat.

      1. This sounds delicious. What cut of pork did you use?

        1. I used a pork shoulder blade roast. It came out just great. Next time I will add more orange juice and some more orange halves; there was just a hint of orange in the meat and I'd like a bit more of that flavor. Everyone raved, though. The meat was "like butter" someone said. The "jus" was great as is and kept the shredded meat really moist.

          It's fun to experiment, isn't it? And fun to share with other Chowhounds! :)
