  1. Haven't been there real recently, but we've always enjoyed Nawab, as have our Indian friends.

    Nawab
    5 S Ellsworth Ave
    San Mateo, CA 94401
    (650) 401-8424

    1. I'd second Nawab. Very good food, affordable, and friendly service. Their lunch buffet is a steal.

I used to love Nawab but the last time we went we were disappointed.

      2. When I lived in Millbrae, Nawab was our go-to restaurant for Northern Indian food. We liked it for awhile, were really disappointed with our one buffet experience, and were underwhelmed our last visit there for dinner three years ago.

Annapoorna which serves South Indian is actually better. Another option is Roti Bistro in Burlingame. It seems to be universally loved in Chowhound. We visited several times. It is in a great setting but the food is pricey and not always great.

FYI to the OP, Annapoorna is vegetarian.

        2. Expand to Foster City, and go to Tabla! This place is very authentic. Young guys at formica tables, big plates of biryana, dosas to kill for, and lots of bollywood screens in every direction. Not your run of the mill north indian tandoori and curry. And look to the specials list - last time I was there I had a great goat curry.
