Good Queens Eats [moved from Manhattan board]
I'm looking for some good food in Queens (on the N,W line). I live in Astoria at the Ditmars stop, so I'm accustomed to the good Greek places in that area. Can someone recommend something else?
I'm looking for something not too expensive... prefer something ethnic over American fare... not mexican... pretty much anything else is game... should be accessible to the subway and in a reasonable walking distance. I also prefer the hidden gems over the overcrowded hot spots. Love fresh pasta, asian (thai, chinese, malaysian, etc.), bbq, indian, seafood.
Suggestions?

Have you considered El Sitio? There are two branches, one in that yet-to-discover country that Woodside Al so justly recommends, on Roosevelt and 68th, or, more convenient for you, there is the 35-55 31st Street branch, right on the N line. Some fantastic stews and soups at the former, one of the city's best Cubanos at the latter. Both branches are homey, cheap and friendly, with great lunch counter atmosphere.

There is a whole Middle Eastern strip on upper Steinway St. just south of the BQE, including the much-mentioned on this site Kebab Cafe (which may be a bit expensive for you). There are also some really interesting Eastern European (from the former Yugoslavia) places in the southern part of Astoria.
You might consider switching to the 7 train at Queens Plaza, which would bring you to the above-mentioned places in Woodside, as well as Korean, Turkish, and odd Nepali-Japanese places in Sunnyside, an entire neighborhood of Indian places (and other things) around 74th St. in Jackson Heights, and of course the largest Chinese neighborhood in the NYC area in Flushing.

I actually do like mexican, but my boyfriend doesn't. Maybe I'll have to venture out there on my own or with friends. :-)
I haven't been to Malagueta, but I think that's actually the restaurant that my boyfriend wanted to try. We just couldn't remember the name. Thanks!

sripaphai in woodside. famous authentic thai.
sapori d'ischia in woodside....gorgeous little hidden italian spot that doubles as an import shop by day, cozy, ramotic restaurant by night.
it's too bad that you don't like mexican...because sunnyside has a great spot. de mole. wow, it is great and you cannot beat the prices.
la flor in woodside is a mixture of mexican and new american. the food is great, the setting could be a bit nicer, but the food and service make up for it.
