How do you IN-N-OUT?

Not trying to stir up a debate on whether In-N-Out makes a good burger or not.

Just want to know HOW you like your burger when you do go to In-N-Out.

Here's how I like mine:

2 patties
1 slice of cheese (in between the patties)
Ketchup (none of that faux 1000 Island-ish sauce/spread)
Lettuce
Tomato (1 slice only)
Onions (grilled)
Untoasted bun

And you?

  1. So exactly how do you place your ORDER when you want that?

    I'm pretty easy:
Double-Double (either Animal style or regular no onions)
    Fries "well-done"

      This is my script:

"Double-double, with one slice of cheese, in the tuck, lettuce and single tomato, hold the sauce, but with ketchup, grill the onions, but leave the bun raw."

Just like those uber-Starbucks customers with their ultra complicated orders, when I all want is a "short drip"! :-)

      1. re: ipsedixit

Way too much trivial information stuck in my head... the way to order the burger part itself on that is a 2x1. By the same token, a Double-Double with extra cheese is a 2x4. If you want a Double-Double without the cheese, it's called a Double Meat.

Then there's the Flying Dutchman... two patties of meat, two slices of cheese. And that's it.

              1. re: SRosie

protien style is just a normal burger, but lettuce wrapped.

        1. re: ipsedixit

And how often do they screw it up? I always hesitate when making an order too custom because of that fear.

          1. re: sasha1

Happily, if something does go wrong, they are amazingly good at fixing it. You get the new one cheerfully done right in a couple of minutes, and if you sounded the least bit perturbed about it then you might end up with some coupons for the next time you're there, too.

            1. re: sasha1

They really don't screw it up that often (at least at the 2 locations that I frequent).

Also, when they do flub the order, more often than not they let you keep the "defective burger" and offer you a free "correct burger" as a replacement.

          2. re: allegro805

cheeseburger w/grilled onions ~~ protein style

            Fries, well-done ~~ animal style

            Diet Coke

          3. DD animal style...crispy fries.

            1. -a 2x1 "with"
              -fries well done

(edit: fries animal style on occasion)

we dont have in and out in canada...what the heck is animal style?

                1. re: icey

It's fries topped w/extra sauce, a slice of cheese & grilled onions. On your receipt it comes out "Grrr" (=animal style).

                  1. re: OCAnn

A burger animal style, though, has grilled onions and is fried in mustard... and it's listed as "ANIMAL" -- the "GRRR" designation is only for fries. :)

You can also get protein-style, which is with lettuce leaves in place of the bun -- and getting it both ways results in your receipt being notated "DBL DBL ANIMAL PROTEIN". :)

              2. Double-double with grilled onions
                Fries well done

                  1. re: jbyoga

i'm not a vegetarian but i like the grilled cheese too for a nice light lunch.

however, i used to get 3 cheeseburgers with onions (not grilled) and i would order them one at a time so i could have a piping hot burger each time. I got a coke and regular fries with that. that was lunch back in the day when i had a good metabolism.

                    1. re: choctastic

time delayed ordering... one of the signs of a true chowhound!

i did get strange looks one time. ah well, hot burgers are worth a few strange looks.

                      2. re: choctastic

I use to know people that would order a 4x4 or 2.

                    2. I switch it up a lot. Not a creature of habit am I...

                      Once I even tried a 20 x 20...got through most of it.

                      1. (2) Double double animal style, no lettuce or tomato, fries well done.

                        1. Ipse -- gotta disagree with you about the untoasted bun. For me, the soft upper with the crispy toasted outer ring on the inner bun is one of the treasures on In'and'Out. I also really like the cheese -- would have at least one slice per burger patty. I went with grilled onions for awhile, but they sometimes made the cheese too oily, so I'm back to a regular onion slice. I agree that ketchup helps, but I like just a little of the thou island so I order very light sauce.

                          1. I just get a double double with fries. The lines are already long enough

                            1. no. two grilled onions coke. lots of salt, pepper, and ketchup on the fries. i eat the cheesepockets off the wrapper, too.

i believe you can order just cheese on the wrapper, too! I forgot what was the "slang" for it though.

                                1. Two burgers, protein style w/ grilled onions and easy on the sauce ('cuz it drips).

same, but no sauce, w/ mustard. sometimes a bun, sometimes a 2X2, with the rest the same.

                                  2. You guys are so lucky to have an In N Out! Like the other east coasters, I'm stuck here in "Burgatory", the land without an In N Out (or Fatburger, Tommy's, or Krystal!)!

In N Out was one of the few memorable meals I had in L.A.! Just a double-double with a chocolate shake!

What is Tommy's? In Ft. Worth we had a place called Tommy's that had three locations I think. One in a gas station, one downtown and one somewhere else. It consistently got voted in the top two or three burgers in the metroplex. My understanding is that these are different places.

                                      1. re: amkirkland

Tommy's is a big burger chain in the west, mainly California I think. Their burgers are excellent - here's the website:

You are correct. The proper terminology is a Double Meat; a Double Cheese can also be ordered, which is a Grilled Cheese, extra cheese.

                                            1. re: sparklegem

Sorry- haven't looked at this post in a while. Sparklegem...what didn't you understand?

no cheese, but you do get lettuce, tomato and the sauce

animal style has grilled onions, the patties are grilled in mustard and you also get pickles

you have to then ask for raw onions

well done fries ..are double fried and crispier/browner

neopolitan- its all three flavors in one shake.

                                          2. Double Double - spread and grilled onions only
                                            Fries Well Done
                                            Iced Tea

Wait, wait, wait, wait, ... , nirvana

                                            1. Double, grilled onions, fries well done and an arnold palmer.

The big bummer is that well done fries adds 10-15 minutes during a rush.

                                                  1. re: Paliman

no, that's protein style, see bcrall below for animal style.

                                                2. Never knew to ask for the fries well done. I've never liked the fries cause they are kind of undercooked.

Hamburger animal style, no sauce sub k&m.

Can't wait until I'm in Phoenix in March to try the well done fries.

Is it me, or is it so LA to have an off menu menu at a fast food joint?

To go, with fries in the box, and wash it down with a vanilla shake or in hot weather, a pink lemonade. That is so true about the grilled onions, they can be like axle grease. But I gotta share this story with all you Chowhounds, and I swear it's true, I was there when it happened. At his book signing for Bouchon, Thomas Keller told the crowd that In-N-Out was his favorite burger in L.A. That's some high praise indeed! (He also likes Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles!)

I've always assumed NO given capacity, safety and liability. However given it's fresh beef, isn't it safe or cook it to spec?

Moved to So Cal in the early 90s. Tried it all...Tommy's, Pinks, In-N-Out.

IMO, In-N-Out has some of the WORST fries. If they cool at all, they are like cardboard. Plus, I don't like mustard on my burger. Their burgers, I think, are OK at best.

Tommy's and Pinks were good...about what I expected.

On some levels I agree...there are better burgers and I&O isn't that special. For me the combo of price and quality makes it hard to beat. I think the double double combo is $4.80...not going to get fresh beef and potatoes anywhere for that price.

                                                                      1. re: mojoman

Ironically, Fatburger's beef is some of the leanest that you'll find in casual restaurants. Bring yourself to go to one some time, it's a darn good burger.

I don't know how I In-and-Out, but I am a NYer who NEVER eats fast food burgers (perhaps a hungover trip to White Castle about two times a year the exception), but I had an In-and-Out during my first trip to LA in October and it had me very, very glad there aren't any outlets in NYC. You see, it was heavenly and the last thing I need is to go back to eating fast food.

2x4 (the in-n-out terminology for a Double-Double with extra cheese) with grilled onions, mustard, mayo, and chiles that he brought in a bag.

                                                                                                              2. I'm originally an East Coaster with only the Big Lebowski to introduce me to In-N-Out. So at first when I came out here I just got cheeseburgers. Then I was introduced to Animal Style, and my boss just told me about Mustard Fried Onions, which I have yet to try. So I'm still basic: Cheeseburger, animal style, mustard fried onions...sometimes fries but no A/S. Sigh...

                                                                                                                1. I usually commit the ultimate in so-cal fast food blasphemy (I call it fast-food fusion but, hey, that's me):

The result is nothing short of extraordinary: a chili-cheese In-N-Out burger I like to call the In-N-Ommy.

The server didn't even blink and told me next time just call it a Lemon-Up. I have ordered it this way at several locations and they always know what I mean.

Tried the animal style fries once. (my sister's fave) Almost had to go to the emergency room. That just takes it too far. I do wish you could order a side of cheese paper though. Sigh.

                                                                                                                    1. I take-out IN& out, throw on a fresh runny, sunny side up egg and hot sauce on single cheeseburger.

I find that the well-done fries absorb too much grease. Light well adds just the right amount of extra crispiness to the fries. I also find that about half the employees at the In-n-Out I frequent in Culver City don't even know what light well means. I always have to explain it and then it's a crap shoot if it will get done right. By the time I'm done waiting, I'm too tired to have them redo it so I stick with the well-done fries most of the time, but not happily.

                                                                                                                        1. Read thru this whole thread and seen plenty of references to grilled and raw onions. Surprised no one mentions WHOLE grilled onions. Instead of getting the chopped/diced onions grilled, they take an entire onion slice and throw that on the grill. You can actually order X qty of whole grilled onions, if you dare. Read somewhere that there was a regular In-N-Out customer who would always order 10 slices of whole grilled onions on his burger, which basically would be an entire medium-sized onion. =-O

And urban legend posted somewhere on the Web is that the largest In-N-Out burger ever was a 250x250, which was to be consumed by a class of fraternity pledges. Can't attest if that were true, but I did see the pictures of the 100x100 that was posted on the Internet a couple years ago. That was a marvel of cow products to behold..... =-D

Here is a classic In-N-Out single cheeseburger and a double double. I ate the double double which came with the standard lettuce, tomato, raw onion and spread, the Mrs. elected to have her cheeseburger with just spread. Two orders of fries, which you gotta eat immedaiately, while they are still hot (I do not subscribe to the well-done fries school) or they get mushy.

Those particular burgers came from the In-N-Out at the Lenwood outlet mall in Barstow (always a necessary stop on the way to Vegas, beside the burgers, large, clean bathrooms).

Next time you’re at In-N-Out (i.e. tomorrow . . . or maybe tonight), order a bag of these off-the-menu specials:

“3-by-3″ = three meat patties and three slices of cheese.

“4-by-4″ = four meat patties and four slices of cheese.

“2-by-4″ = two meat patties and four slices of cheese.

*Note: You can get a burger with as many meat patties or cheese slices as you want. Just tell the In-N-Out Burger cashier how many meat patties and how much cheese you want and that is what you’ll get! For instance, if you want 6 pieces of meat and 10 pieces of cheese tell them you want a “6-by-10.”

“Double Meat” = like a Double Double without cheese.

“3 by Meat” = three meat patties and no cheese.

“Animal Style” = the meat is cooked and fried with mustard and then pickles are added, extra spread and grilled onions are added.

“Veggie Burger” = burger without the patty or cheese. Sometimes we call this the “Wish Burger.”

Scary thought. Burger = 670 and shake = 690. Yikes.

Given the health concern of nixing the bread and sauce, yet loading up on the meat and cheese I might call this bi-polar syle. To me it's one of the greatest hedonistic adventures without completely blowing the scale.

That first buttery toasted hit -- sublime.

My 17-year-old prefers grilled so he'll get them both ways sometimes.
