Need a not-too sweet chocolate frosting.... that hardens

I tried searching but everything I saw was either a buttercream or ganache, neither of which fits what I'm looking for.

I'm trying to recreate a frosting for my dad, whose grandmother would make this when he was little. It would be dark chocolate, but he said "it gets hard on the outside" so I'm just assuming a crust on the outside.

Any ideas?

  1. I made a Maida Heatter sour cream frosting on Christmas for my husbands birthday and it did get hard on the outside. I think the recipe called for milk chocolate but we're big dark chocoalte eaters so I think I mixed the chocolate. It was basically melted choclate mixed with sour cream. It did get thick like ganache though. Let me know if you want me to look for the recipe. I think it was in her "cakes" book.
