Every couple days I walk past a hole-in-the-wall on Hoxton St. called Rare. No menu, no windows - just a big sign RARE over a black door. Anyone ever been there? I'm wondering whether this is one of those amazing places that nobody (other than Chowhounders, I hope) has heard of, or just another steak joint that's trying to look hip.

On a completely unrelated note, WHY IS NOTHING OPEN THIS WEEK?!!

Phew! Had to get that off my chest.

I live about 50 yards from Rare and have eaten there twice. The pub below used to be a hang-out.

The concept was 'all you can eat' steak. On each occasion we were the only people there, so the only interaction was between us and the waitress.

Not a place I would recommend, you get the impression that it is being run as a tax right-off, or that its a front for the Hoxton Mafia. Its also depressing on a level that you would find hard to believe.

I've eaten there. I'd describe the concept as 'no menu' rather than 'all you can eat' . . . I'm fairly sure they don't keep the steaks coming.

Unfortunately the food ain't that great - sort of average. Steak, chips and their special/secret (though in reality, boring) sauce.

If you want steak hop in a cab and go to Hawksmoor. If you want good food nearby, walk up the street to Bacchus.
