Seeking upscale SF fusion, experimental a plus

  • 8

SO loves this kind of food, feels cheated that I went to Ame without her. What are the other first-rate places in town? (Besides Slanted Door).

  1. Bushi-Tei is still off-radar and while not as extensive-a-menu as Ame, quite good and highly recommended.

    1. Slanted Door isn't really fusion -- it's "modern" Vietnamese.

One true fusion restaurant that tends to fly under the radar is The House in North Beach -- there were some reports a few months ago that indicated it was still turning out good fusion food: http://www.chowhound.com/topics/show/...

The House is the boyfriend's and my favorite restaurant. The sea bass (in a ginger, soy sauce, miso preparation with green beans and garlic noodles) is outstanding.

      2. Not so much fusion as experimental, but you should try COI.
Probably some of the most innovative food coming out of SF, if not the US right now...

Completely agree on COI and regret not having mentioned it before. For an outstanding multi-course meal with wine pairings, this one is comparable with Ame.

thank you! I'm going to give Coi a shot--I recall someone talking about it the night I ate at Ame, and I think I was subconsciously fishing for that name.

        2. Sutra (where Slanted Door used to be) is an Asian-fusion restaurant that serves entrees and small plates. SF Chronicle just did a review of it so it may be hard to get a table, but they do have a nice velvety lounge.

          1. Another Asian-fusion restaurant that you might want to try is EOS.
