Suggestions for substitutes for a visitor?

I think that maybe the restaurant closes for a week or two around the holidays and Rick takes the staff on a working vacation to Mexico or something. Sounds great to me!

Beverator is the winner. This is vacation week, straight from the horse's mouth (or in this case, the chef's website, www.rickbayless.com):

"Annual Vacation time for Frontera Grill & Topolobampo – We will be closed January 1st through January 8th...we will reopen Tuesday, January 9th...call us after 8:30am to make your reservations."

      Lo siento mucho, OP! :o(

You can't make reservations at Frontera unless it's for 6 or 7 people. Call to make sure if they are open or not. I am CERTAIN I have been there for lunch on a Friday.

Blackbird is very good, and can even be memorable. Good choice.

Why is Frontera closed on Friday? Is Topolobampo closed too? http://www.rickbayless.com/restaurants

I assumed from the original post that it's closed this particular Friday (tomorrow) only. But I could be wrong...?

Huh, I tried to make reservation via opentable and it said they were closed - I also tried calling a few weeks back and they said on the phone they were closed on Friday - hm

I thought you couldn't make reservations for Frontera unless it ws s for a larger party. Maybe that's the issue. But if it is closed, I like Salpicon. EDIT: Salpicon is not opened for lunch. Sorry!

What are you looking for? Specifically Mexican? Or just something memorable? Any other types of food/experience you prefer?

Where will you be coming from?

Yeah, Mexican, coming from Boston where there ain't any (just bad tex-mex burritos).

I've just checked out the website for Blackbird - what do you think? (In the 'something memorable category)

Salpicon is another good high-end Mexican if Frontera really is closed.
