New Year's problems At Simon LA

Been meaning to post this for a few days now. We wound up having a good time there, but there were some MAJOR issues. Price was $125 a head, and we had a TON of food, but our waitress seemed to have a chip on her shoulder about having to work on midnight. Two of the people in our party were kosher, and when they tried to order the tuna dynamite w/o crab, were told "that's probably not a good idea". they wound up accomodating, but it was still annoying.

even though the first few courses came out in a timely fashion, we had to wait FOREVER for our entrees. We had a 9:30 reservation, and the main courses didn't come out until after midnight. I ordered my steak medium rare and it came out completely bloody. Took five minutes to track the waitress down, and then another ten for them to send out the new steak, and when it finally came it was about half the size of the first one. The only thing that the waitress did to apologize was keep pouring us champagne. Which actually did help a little once we saw the final bill.

They also added an automatic 18% tip, which I thought was pretty obnoxious considering how slow the service was.

Like I said, we had a good time, but I'm not gonna rush back there anytime soon.

  1. Haven't been, but don't judge any restaurant by NYE - its probably the worst night of the year to dine out.

    Other nights I'd avoid "judging" restaurants:

    Valentine's Day
    Mother's Day - esp. brunch
    Any major holiday ie. thanksgiving, xmas. Generally, it's the second string staff.

    I still enjoy dining out on some of these holidays, but I've learned to really lower my expectations.

    1. I went to Simon LA when it opened a few months ago and it was just okay. I was not impressed by the fish I ordered (can't remember exactly what I ordered), but the entrees my party got were pretty decent.

      1. i have been to simon several times since he opened in los angeles, and every single time both the service and the food were quite good.
