30th Birthday for my wife

I need an italian restaurant with a private room (if possible) in Manhattan for a surprise dinner.I think we have about 30 people.I tried Fresco and they are not available.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Crispo is a great suggestion - I think they would give you the back room, which is a nice spot and should be the right size. The atmosphere there, particularly in the back room, is excellent, and the food is great too.

That being said, do you have a budget in mind? I know Trattoria Dopo Teatro (right in Times Square) has some beautiful private spaces downstairs... their food is not 4 star but the prices are reasonable, too.

I went to Dopo Teatro last April and was singularly unimpressed with the food.

I think Crispo has a private room - may not be big enough though. Del Posto has plenty of private space in their downstairs area.

Il Buco, a restaurant with tasty food but overpriced and has a fear of putting a decent portion of food on a plate has a private cellar that would likely be accomodating. Not sure if it holds 30 though.

Trio is more "Mediterranean" I think, but is pretty good. I find the room a bit too dark (low lighting with very dark woods) but for some, that's a good thing.

It's not your typical Italian, but Trio on Murray Hill has a nice private room and the food is really good. Take a look in their website and see if it works for you.
