The kind that comes with a layer of pink, then yellow and then green? I haven't had these since I was a kid and my memory's failing, maybe there was chocolate with sliced almonds on the outside? I tried my darnest last summer to find a bakery in KC that made them but ended up with a new list of bakeries:
Corolla 816-474-1860
Napolean's (Westport)
Taylor's(Wornall/73-4st) ?Not sure if it exists?

Does anyone know of a place in KC area that might have them? Or do I have to cast a wider net like St. Louis?

I've seen cookies like that at the St. Joseph Day food displays at some of the Catholic churches in the old Italian neighborhoods on KC's east side. St. Joseph Day is March 19th.

There also was an Italian grocerer (dang, can't recall the name right now) somewhere around maybe 6th Street and The Paseo if memory serves me. They used to have those cookies. I believe the grocery closed a few years back but don't know if they totally closed or moved elsewhere.

You might also call LaSala's on 5th Street in the Columbus Park neighborhood (the old Little Italy area). If they don't carry those cookies, maybe they know where you can find them.

Not sure if they're the same cookies but there's a Mexican version that fits that description, except I don't recall chocolate on them. Buttery tender things. I used to get them at a Mexican bakery on SW Blvd across the street from La Bodega (just east of Summit). If the bakery is still there, you might want to see if those cookies are comparable to the Italian version.

Good luck!

I thought of the name of that Italian grocery that I was trying to remember last night. Scimeca's!

I see a listing now for a new location:
Scimeca's Market
7115 N Quincy Ave
Kansas City, MO 64119-5479
(816) 413-0678

Obviously, I haven't been there. But if any of you are interested in the St. Joseph Day events on March 19, I'm sure Scimeca's could guide you to venues. I know Scimeca's provides food for some of them.

Also thought of a few more places for you to inquire:

Ask that darling Jake Imperiale at Bella Napoli in Brookside and the charming Jasper Mirabile at Jasper's in Watts Mill. Mama Mirabile used to do a lot of the baking for the restaurant. Not sure if she still is or not but I bet Jasper (or Jake in Brookside) could guide you to resources if they don't carry those cookies.

Might also try Carolla's Market in City Market.

Good luck. Please keep us posted. I'd like to go get some if you find any! :)

Ooops, just notice that you already checked Carolla's. Sorry.

Re: your first post:

>> Taylor's(Wornall/73-4st) ?Not sure if it exists?

Gosh, only bakeries I can even imagine in that area are McClain's on Wornall just north of 75th and that French bakery a block west of there on Washington (I think that's Washington, at least). Doubt either would have that particular cookie but worth a call at least to McClain's.

Here's a real long shot. Call John Wade at Mario's on Westport Road next to the post office. He always has had a big case full of Italian cookies. Not sure if he has those you want specifically, but maybe he knows a source or could get them for you. They close really early anymore, like maybe as early as 3 p.m. or so.

Have you checked out Cupini's too? I can't remember if I've seen those particular cookies, but I know they usually have quite a variety of Italian cookies. Aren't those cookies considered a Christmasy type cookie too? Could be why they are difficult to find!

I had called Cupini's back then and they didn't have them. I think these cookies are sometimes called wedding cookies. Maybe I ought to look for them in June! I'll have to check out those places you mentioned KCJ.

I've never been in, but you might try Boulevard Bakery on Independence Ave. It's the old Italian neighborhood (though maybe a better place to get pho or halal meat now), and the American Sons Of Columbus is still right around the corner.

Try DiCapo in KC: http://dicapofoods.com/ I haven't seen the rainbow cookies in stores or at the website, but they might make them special order, or offer them seasonally.

Carol Walters has a recipe in her cookie book, if you're interested in making them yourself.
