If JP is an option, don't forget that cornucopia of pancake and french toast options (as well as everything else a good diner might offer for breakfast) at Sorella's, in the Hyde Square part of JP. Definitely laid back and casual, but usually no one is yelling.

There's actually a lot besides those mentioned (of varying qualities): Martin's in Brookline Village, Steve's and Grecian on Harvard Ave., Eagle in Cleveland Circle, the place across from the Shaw's on Comm. Ave. whose name I never remember, the little place on Brighton Ave. just before Market St., Breakfast Club on Western Ave., Brigham Circle Diner and Steve's on Newbury St. And Sonsie for that matter.

Is Grecian Yearning in Allston (I think that's what you meant) still there? I thought I noticed with some chagrin driving past there recently that it was gone, can't remember what I saw in its place. That was a good little breakfast joint for a long time. I could be just unobservant, though.

The place across from Shaw's is Cookin' Cafe, and it's decent, too. T. Anthony's just down the block toward Kenmore also does good cheap breakfasts.

Yep, Grecian Yearning is still there tho I think they cut off the Yearning from their name. They close earlier now. Used to be quite the place for rockers to gather for breakfast (along with Steve's), probably still is. Cookin Cafe is good cuz you order at the counter so you save a couple bucks.

Also, Same Ole Place in JP does greasy spoon breakfast but I've never had it. Maybe out of the OP's territory. If not, Bon Savor has good breakfasts.

The coffee shop/restaurant at the Marriot Copley has just redone their breakfast buffet.

The Busy Bee serves a decent diner-style breakfast, and I guess is a fun place to go if you find it amusing that the staff screams at each other all the time. I find it unpleasant.

Thats the BEST part about it! One time I was there the husband was ranting about killing a deer in his yard with a shotgun but the Newton police wouldn't let him. Blah Blah Blah. The wife was shouting at him, calling him a murderer!

The Busy Bee is the model for the diner in Saturday Night Live-- "Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger."

How can you not like a place that's not been updated since the Nixon aadministration ? Where the waitresses call you "hon?"

Admittedly, I've been a regular for nearly 30 years .....

To each his/her own - I used to go there 25 years ago when I lived nearby; for some time after that I would stop in every couple of years when I'd forgotten why I didn't go there more often, and I'd get reminded why. I don't find screaming people funny; they make me extremely uncomfortable and they ruin my enjoyment of food. Decor and motherly waitresses don't make up for that simple fact - the atmosphere at the Busy Bee give me a knot in my stomach that takes a couple of hours to relax.

Metaphorically speaking, of course....Everyone knows the BillyGoat tavern in Chicago was the model for "Cheeseburger, Cheeseburger", don't they? ;)

Yes, metaphorically. I was trying to explain the Billy Goat to someone on Sunday (they had a shot of it on during the Bears game) and they were outraged at the cheeseburger-only thing.

Family, a good local turkish restaurant on Washington Street in Brookline, does decent breakfast, zaftigs on Harvard Street, and if you want the extravaganza type (all the bacon you ever wanted to eat before they measured your cholesterol) the Marriott Copley at about 16.00 bucks for the buffet. Steve's on Newbury if you want Back Bay is ok. My favorite is Town Diner but that's Watertown (Mt. Auburn).

In Brookline, Zafdig, a tasty Jewish deli

Third for Zaftig's. I tend to get either the lox plate or the salami and eggs.

I'm pretty sure that Eastern Standard does breakfast every day. I do know, for sure, that Henrietta's Table in the Charles Hotel (Harvard Square) does breakfast daily.

Henrietta's Table does indeed do a very good although expensive breakfast. The Courtyard by Marriot in Coolidge Corner also does breakfast though I haven't tried it. The Busy Bee on Beacon St by St. Mary's in Brookline is a fifties style diner with an appropriate breakfast.
