Zankou Chicken still downhill

Noclue Dec 31, 2006 10:59 PM

I was nearby and hadn't been in a while, so I ran in for a quick 1/2 chicken. I can report it has not returned to former glory. Still dry and tasteless as it has been since the owner's passing.

The Burbank location is consistenly great, whether it's busy or not. The sauce has more flavor and the meat isn't dried out. I'm not very happy with Hollywood these days.

Pasadena was good last time I was there. And, the original one in Glendale was as good as always. As an owner of a restaurant I know you're only as good as the worst meal you serve. If one employee left the chicken cook too long, or made too many at one time or underseasoned a rack, a bunch of people are going to get bad meals and if it's your first time there it will be your last. I hope they take head of some of your comments here as when they are on top of their game I think they are the best.

I agree with Mr. Dan, Zankou is blah blah bland, No flavor. It's like they just put a chicken in the oven with nothing even sprinkled on it for God's sake. And it's true , the side dishes are terrible. I hate Zankou, way overrated. I buy my roast chix at Gelsons...they are bigger and way more flavorful, and you get a whole one for the same price as Zankou mini chicken.

The hot birds at Food 4 Less are also better than Zankou and quite a bit cheaper.

And that's why I go to Pollo Alla Brasa in Gardena (or Western, or Montebello)

I went last friday and the food was good, I love the chicken tarna and the tri-tip, but the garlic sauce was pre-packaged and not the same, and the prices did go up, still cheap by LA standards, but almost a buck more then before. oh yeah, this is the West LA location

The chicken at Zankou is plain with hardly any seasoning on the skin. It's pricey for what you get and very bland and the sides stink. California chix kitchen's chicken isn't much better but they at least have very good sides.

I always have a good meal at California Chicken Cafe (Mr. Dan: I am assuming this is what you meant by California Chix Kitchen. If I am wrong, let me know). Its just a roast chicken, but nicely seasoned and cooked properly, so that it is still juicy. Side dishes and salads are very good as well.

I loved the spinach & feta cold pasta side dish, but they recently discontinued it @ Cal Chicken Cafe. I was so dissapointed. It was great cold or hot.

My most recent detour around traffic on the 405 found me at the Zankou on Sepulveda Blvd. in Van Nuys. The 1/2 Roast Chicken and several extra Garlic Sauces and Warm Pita were very good as usual. I've never liked the Pink Pickles but they gladly substitute a mound of yellow chilis.

It was at the Van Nuys location. Dry chicken. Bland sauce.
