South Island, NZ

Yet more tourists going to New Zealand in February.

I am looking for a posh romantic restaurant in Queenstown/Arrowtown or Christchurch. I also welcome reccomendations for restaurants that highlight local NZ ingredients in Christchurch, the West Coast and Marlborough. For the romantic dinner, I am thinking of the The Postmaster's House in Arrowtown, but welcome other suggestions.

Any wineries in Central Otago or Marlborough that one shouldn't miss? So far, we plan to see Amisfield, Mount Edward and Wairau River.

On a different note, is the Indonesian restaurant in Napier worth a visit?

  1. We had a nice meal at Herzog Restaurant which is near Blenheim in the Marlborough area. One of our group still says it was the best dinner he has had and he does enjoy his food. I enjoyed it but would give it 8/10.

    1. North of Christchurch, Amberley has Norwester Cafe. Great local ingredients ostrich a specialty.

The bistro at Amisfield is excellent and stays open til 8pm, if that is late enough for dinner. Great views.

If you go up the east coast from Christchurch I recommend Pegasus Bay in the Waipara Valley, and Torlesse (had the winemaker pouring).

Central Otago, Peregrine and Mt. Difficulty if you make it that far.

      1. Dux Deluxe (sp) is an attractive, trendy restaurat in downtown Queenstown (downtown). The menu looks interesting. The food is tasty. The service, alas, is a letdown -- or was last August, anyway. Just a small forewarning.

        1. If you are going to be in the town of Fox Glacier, try the Cafe Neve which was great when I went a few years ago. You really should do an all-day hike on the glacier as well.

          1. Try Saffron Restaurant in Arrowtown.
