Which Grand Rapids?

No, I'm not joking - there are cities called Grand Rapids in MN and OH too (at least)... Certainly they're not as big as the one in MI, but - well, it just helps to be clear what city you're talking about when the board covers so many states.

I assume you're joking. There's only one good-sized city called Grand Rapids in the United States, and it's in Michigan.
Grand Rapids has quite a good assortment of dining options for a relatively small city. My favorite is Leo's, which specializes in seafood and is located downtown:
Leo's Restaurant
60 Ottawa NW
Grand Rapids MI 49503

Also consistently excellent is Bistro Bella Vita, for Italian food downtown:
Bistro Bella Vita
44 Grandville Ave. SW
Grand Rapids MI
616-222-4600

There is a group of restaurants all over the GR area called the Gilmore Collection. You can find a complete list, with links to the websites of the individual establishments, on their website at http://www.thegilmorecollection.com/Gilmore%20Collection/restaurants.html I've been to several of them (Blue Water Grill northeast of downtown, Gill's Blue Crab downtown, Rose's on Reed Lake on the east side, and Thornapple Daily Grill east of town) and all are consistently excellent. Beware of long waits on Saturday nights at Rose's on Reed Lake (I don't know whether they accept reservations).
You can find a fairly complete list of restaurants throughout the Grand Rapids metro area on the website of the Grand Rapids/Kent County Convention & Visitors Bureau at

I should also add that two restaurants in the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel downtown - The 1913 Room and Cygnus 27 - are both supposed to be very good, but I have not eaten at either one so I can't report from first-hand experience. You can view their menus on their website.

I had a very good meal at San Chez Tapas a few weeks ago when visiting GR on business. Excellent service and a nice Spanish wine with small plates.
