Best chocolate chips for cookies?
My Dad insists that the Nestle Tollhouse morsels don't taste the same as they used to. Does anyone have a reco for some great-tasting chocolate chips? I'm not a fan of Ghiradelli, but open to other options! Thanks.

I like Guittard but the new Nestle Chocolatier are good, too. Bigger chunks.

I also favor Guittard, and those made by See's Chocolate (which I've heard are made for them by Guittard)

I just use hershey's chipits - the cookies come out great....if not just chop up your fave eating chocolate into chunks.....or baking chocolate......either works great

As far as relatively major brands go, Guittard is the best bet. However, I have been using the new Ghirardelli 60% Cacao Chips lately and really like them, especially when I picked them up for $1.50/bag! I think Ghir is decent buy overhyped for the most part, but these are really good!

You may have a problem with the type of chip rather than brand issues. I forget all the varieties (semi-sweet, milk chocolate, etc...) but it could be within the pickens of those types.
Are you cutting back on the salt anyplace? If so, once the chips get melted into the dough, you can get bitter or an unpleasant chocolate taste.

My chocolate cookies are famous (with me) and I always use a good quality artisanal semi sweet chocolate and chop my own 'chips.'
The irregular shape is much more appealing in a cookie and more of a surprise. Takes almost no time.

I use Callebaut semi-sweet chips. You can get them through King Arthur's Bakers Catalogue.

Ghiradelli Double Choclate Chips or their new 70% cacao chips are the best chips I've ever used. A noticable difference over Nestle or Hershey, imho

I agree re: the Ghirardelli bittersweet. They have a deeper chocolate flavor.

Trader Joe's brand is a really good chocolate chip - don't know who makes it for them. Ghirardelli are also good, imho better than Nestles.

For anyone in Canada, President's Choice (Superstore, Longos, No Frills) makes excellent chocolate chips.

Ghirardelli 60% cacao chips! They're large & have a smooth, deep chocolate taste

in a pinch i got a bag of choc chips at Whole Foods -- the store brand kind -- and they were awesome, sweet and creamy and i swear so much better than Nestle. tho i've had some hershey's lately that have been v. good, i wonder if its a matter of freshness too
