I have too many cookbooks and need to clear my shelves! Do you have an idea of where I can recycle them? Do you want them?

Most of Saveur 2003 (plus a few)
Most of Gourmet 2004 (plus a couple)

I just want to get rid of 'em (for the price of shipping, if required).

Thanks --

I once hit the motherlode when I drove to the library to put my books in the night drop. Someone had left all of their old cooking magazines out in front.

There were over 5 years worth of Martha Stewart, and several years each of Gourmet and Bon Appetit. I put all of them in my car. After I looked through them I took them to my office and put them in the lunch room.

Martha Stewart disappeared within minutes. All the rest were gone within a couple of hours.

But, bottom line, your local library may be a good place to start.

With online resources these days, older cooking magazines aren't for serious cooks. But after spending several hours in a large hospital waiting room, these kinds of reading material are far more entertaining than news magazines that are a couple of months out of date.

Sorry Nosh I am disagreeing with you. I consider myself to be a serious cook. If what you say is true, than why are there so many libraries. These magazines can be used as another resource, and I also like the advantage of having many options to choose from when doing research rather than limiting myself to the internet.

Use another great internet resource freecycle.org.

http://www.freecycle.org/

Join your local group read the rules of the road and post an offer of the magazines. Someone will come and get them and love them.

I wait until I have one of those small shopping bags that just fits a typical magazine and post a bag full.

Had that not worked, I would have started making phone calls to cooking schools and the like -- but I'm trying to make this as easy as possible (on me!).

freecycle.org

If you're in an area with a freecycle group, you can join, then post a note on what you're trying to recycle. There's sure to be someone who wants what you don't.

After checking with my local library information desk, I got a referral to the American Merchant Marine Library in Oakland, CA. It was delighted to get magazines of any type to have on board ships to help pass the time. If you're on a coast, you may be able to find a similar place.
Not all public libraries accept magazines, so you need to check. One wanted only a certain year of Bon Appetit that it didn't already have, and it didn't want copies to which it did not already subscribe.
