Cooking Classes in Kolkata

We're going to be spending about two weeks in Kolkata (Calcutta, for those not into the Indianized name) in January (soon!). As it is our second extended stay there (work for me, pleasure for my s.o.), we are looking for additional diversions, and one that would be particularly appealing would be some lessons in Bengali (or Indian generally) cooking. I cannot find anything by standard online searches, so I appeal to the readers of this board -- any ideas of specific places to go for classes or where to look? We'd love to hear about anything, from a one-time class to a week-long series. Thanks.

  1. I don't have any good ideas myself, but you might want to post in the Calcutta sections of the forum. Lots of clued-in people there, and they might know.

I would think that would be a better source than indiamike - some of the participants are food-obsessed bengalis!

You might want to ask around when you get to Kolkata - even try asking at one of the wellknown bengali-cuisine restaurants, such as Kewpie, or ask professional acquaintances. Most of the indian cuisines are practiced at the highest level in the home, so finding a home cook who would be willing to let you watch here cook might work. My daughter is out of the country now, but I will see if I can get her to ask around when she returns to Kolkata next week.

I think Jan Feb is the "season" in Kolkata too, with lots of cultural activities, so enjoy!
