baked red date cake

mbe Dec 25, 2006 10:23 PM

Can someone please tell me the name of the baked cake that has chinese red dates in it. It's baked in a large rectangular pan, about 5" thick and then cut and sold by weight. Dark brown in colour. Has been for sale in Shanghai since the weather turned cooler.
Also, I've only seen it for sale on Changhua lu (not that I've looked for it anywhere else), has anyone seen it elsewhere?

I don't have an answer, but a red date and longan soup is traditionally eaten on Dong Zhi (Winter solstice). Maybe the cake combines this tradition with Christmas cake. In other words, maybe it's China's answer to the fruit cake. I was in Shanghai from Nov. 14 to Dec. 12, and noticed that Christmas is becoming more visible and commercialized in Shanghai than never before.

it is very very much like a baked spice cake that my grandmother used to make, the same stall sells baked sweet mantou.
