I am not sure what the big deal is with this restaurant. I had mediocre food there but am willing to try it again, if anyone can convince me that they had an excellent experience there.

  1. I was at Bellavitae recently with someone who knew the owner and ranted and raved about the food. We were a large party so I got to try many dishes. Anyway we let the owner order for us and I have to say I enjoyed one of the wines very much but the food was a huge disappointment. I left thinking what a joke. Some of the dishes were so amateurish it was embaressing. New Yorkers are so gullible. The hype over the restaurant reminds me of the story of the emperor having no clothes.

    1. I've been to Bellavitae several times over the past month and enjoyed it each time. Because the restaurant has been so heavily hyped, I think people get the wrong idea. This is no Babbo; it's not cutting-edge, innovative food (nor is it priced like it). The menu is heavily dependent on ingredients, and I've found the simple dishes are the best. For example: a big pile of prosciutto with homemade pillows of bread; chicken liver crostini; crispy risotto; braised Swiss chard. If you're looking for food that's going to change your life, I don't think Bellavitae is the place. But if you're looking for a neighborhood restaurant that you can go to two or three times a month for a good meal, Bellavitae should please you.

I totally agree iraform. I only went once, probably a year ago, with a table of 6 or 7 of us. We ordered loads of small dishes and really enjoyed, particularly for the excellent quality of the ingredients. This place isnt trying to be Babbo...its a classic little small plate Italian restaurant. In particular, I remember a cauliflower dish that was just out of this world and that I probably talked about for 2 weeks after.

      2. i agree, i think it's an ok place for the neighborhood (i live in soho), but worth a special visit? not really.

        1. Hey, I'm more than happy with people not returning. Bellavitae is a great little Roman trattoria that serves very high quality ingredients very simply prepared. There's not a lot of masterful cooking going on. There is a masterful attention to quality, however.

          1. This is simply a palate issue.

Bellavitae is all about simply prepared, very high quality ingredients. Some like that, some don't.
