Mexican Market (PDX)
Anyone know of a mexican market where I can buy prepared food (i.e. carnitas, tamales) in Portland? I'm in town for Xmas, and am thinking of making a mexican dinner for xmas day. In NE, but will travel anywhere in p-town.
Thanks,
Oz

I gotta thank you for turning us onto TyT. We finally went there after reading your recommendation a while ago and really love it. Our daughter loves it too and calls it "Woodburn" (see my earlier post about Woodburn Mexican Restaurants).
Their deli/prepared food is excellent, The tostadas are top notch (although I still think I like Juanitas chips better), but the best thing we get there are their sauces. That mole sauce it the best I've ever had.

Your best option is Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon at 162nd and Glisan. The Max goes nearby if you don't want to drive. They have some of the best tamales around and sell carnitas and chicharron that they make themselves by the pound. Also great Mexican stews and fresh commercial-style tortillas.

Most are on the westside and the outlying areas. There's a good little carniceria and market at -- what is it? -- 20th and Alberta maybe. Don Pancho. I don't remember them doing their own carnitas or anything like that, though. La Bonita at like 28th and Alberta (you'll want to look these up, I'm going by memory) has good tamales, though they're a bit more expensive than a lower-end taqueria, but still not too bad, like $1.50 each.
Not far from Tortilleria y Tienda de Leon is Su Casa Imports. I think it's on Stark. Another options. Better for dry goods and canned goods and produce, though. btw, see here:
