Vincitorio's - Tempe
A while back I had asked on this thread http://www.chowhound.com/topics/33980... for some suggestions on some neighborhood Italian places around our neck of the woods.
For dinner tonight we wanted something that would warm us up(on this cold and dreary day!) but not take us too far from home or get us caught too much in the friday before the holiday traffic.
So...we pulled out the old thread and decided to try out Vincitorio's on the SE corner of McClintock and Elliot.
Don't know what we were expecting but not what we found when we walked in...small cozy place with brick walls, tastefully decorated for the holiays...
We were sat towards the back which was perfectly fine since there was a live musician getting ready to star playing in the front. Settled in to review the menu.
Homemade pasta is the big thing here it seems. Myself, while I love pasta and Italian food I don't care much for heavy sauces - red or cream which often limits options in a lot of restaurants. Dh settled on the Orrechiette - fresh pasta tossed with olive oil, broccoli, homemade sausage, garli. None of the other homemade pastas were calling to us so I decided to try some of the seafood and ended up with the Snapper special - served with a white wine sauce, some clams, some prawns and over linguine.
I was pleased to see prosecco offered by the glass - something Tutti Santi where we usually go doesn't offer- and ordered a glass of that.
We started with the Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto....which was the leanest, least salty prosciutto I've ever been served! Also very thick cut. the asparagus was cooked well but the prosciutto...wasn't prosciutto!
Next was the soup which was included in our meal. We both ordered the Italian wedding soup. It came from the kitchen underseasoned but a little salt and pepper at the table fixed that and the flavor was good...but the stock hadn't been defatted.
The pastas came out. Mine was steaming hot. A couple littleneck clams and a couple large prawns. The clams seemed fine but the prawns were over cooked. The snapper was well cooked though and the wine sauce was good. Pasta was just right - al dente.
Husband's orechiette could have been hotter. I thought the homemade pasta was a bit thick and gummy - possibly under cooked. The homemade sausage in it was pretty tasty.
On the whole we preferred Tutti Santi but this was a touch less expensive. We really wanted to like this place as we liked the atmosphere and the staff were all very friendly. We think we may not have ordered right and the things they do right may be things we don't often order - liked the lasagnas, parmagianas, etc.
the table next to us all ordered small individual pizzas that came out just as we were paying our check. These looked pretty good...we'd like to go back and try those.
So for seafood pasta - I'm sticking wiht Tutti Santi( I love their Vongole!)...but I think we'll give VinciTorio's another try for pizza.
Still lots of other suggestions on that list you all gave us to try out...looking forward to trying more!
