Fresh Pie in Tribeca

A friend of mine recently brought me a pumpkin pie from this shop at 149 Church St. (between Chambers and Warren). It was absolutely one of the best I've ever had, with just the right amount of sweetness and texture in the filling and a rich, buttery crust.

I went there myself the other day. It's a somewhat downmarket block with a discount store and Indian takeout place, and the pie shop itself is pretty nondescript. They keep a fairly small number of 6-inch pies in a glass case on the counter and more in baking sheets stacked just behind the counter. I saw apple, pumpkin, sweet potato, chicken pot pie and shepherd's pie. They also had a couple of larger pies too and a bunch of muffins and other small pastries.

I bought an apple pie, a chicken pot pie and a blueberry muffin and ate all of them in the next two days. The muffin was okay, nothing spectacular. The chicken pot pie was extremely good though, double-crusted with a good amount of chicken along with potatoes, peas, carrots and broccoli in a fairly light gravy. The apple pie was also great, with a few raisins dotting the apple slices. The crust for all the pies is the same and it is great. A sign at the shop says they only use butter and it certainly tastes that way.

I personally think these pies are better than the ones at Kitchenette, Little Pie or Bubby's. The place seems pretty under the radar but I hope they last until I can try their seasonal peach, blueberry and strawberry rhubarb pies.

Are you trying to suggest the name of this little place? I know it is not Umanoff and Parsons. It has a very catchy name though. I am hoping that Tony L can remember
or someone who has been there. thank you shy
