Where in Atlanta should I plant myself?
Going to Atlanta for the Peach Bowl. Want to know what part of town is best. Prefer to have good chow, local color, a bit of hustle and bustle within walking distance of the hotel.
Have stayed in Buckhead a couple of times, and it was OK. More suburban-ish. If that is the best that Atlanta has to offer, I can live with that, but would hope that there is a part of town with a bit more of a neighborhood feel. Or maybe with a bit more of a cosmopolitan feel.
Once I settle on a part of town, I'll start focusing on the chow.
Though I agree that Midtown is probably the best 'hood to stay, in the spirit of having choices, you might also consider staying at the Highland Inn Hotel in the Virginia Highlands neighborhood. The area is one of the most pedestrian friendly in Atlanta, with lots of pubs, shops, cafe's and restaurants that are more likely to be independantly operated.
That was my leaning. Any suggestions on where to stay (I want to save money but prefer to avoid one or two star accomodations) and where to eat and entertain ourselves in the area? Breakfast, lunch and dinner would be useful. Nothing too upscale. Travelling with my college age son.
