One Market can be very good indeed(the recent pasta dish we had was fabulous) but don't expect anything fancy or knock-your-socks off original -- the place harkens back to old San Francisco Cal-Italia in tone. The fruit de mer was the best bang for your buck in that offering that I've had anywhere in town (although I still prefer Zuni's overall), with oysters as pristine and fresh as what you would get down the hall at Hog Island. As far as views, the restaurant faces the front of the building, not the Bay. So it has a nice outdoor seating area, but no spectacular views of the water. It seems to have the largest crowd for after work drinks and I'd guess lunch, but we have taken out of towners there for a business-oriented dinner and they also loved it.

OOps. You're right.

One Market has no views per se, as it isn't on the water.

I've been to One Market, I enjoy the food and think it's as creative as many of the restaurants in its price range. As well, when we've sat in the window booths, we've had nice views of the lit Ferry Building tower and the Bay Bridge. No water views, but that didnt' ruin our experience. I also liked the fact that the entrees were in the mid $20s. I'm wary of the places who've now crossed that $30 threshhold. Sorry, I love SF, but it AIN'T New York by any stretch.

Well, as a former President, you might find the offerings a bit dull. :)

However, most people who eat there seem to enjoy the food. I'd say it's a solid choice for higher end American dinner fare.

Yes, I've always considered One Market the penultimate "expense account" restaurant, with the requisite formality and cost to impress, but little creativity to distract from the discussion at hand.

Yes, it's good. But so are 200 other restaurants in The City. One Market is a vestiage of the high-end comfort food trend that spiked in the mid-90's. A spin-off of Bradley Ogden's Larkspur Cafe, One Market made Meatloaf cool and is almost entirely responisble for the (YAWN) garlic mashed potatoed craze that won't seem to die a pleasant and silent death. If that's your thing, I'd seek out old school places like Original Joe's or The House of Prime Rib--relics that have stood the test of time, have great food, and give you a historical peek into San Francisco's culinary past. You can get garlic mashers anywhere.

Thing is you actually CAN'T get garlic mashers at One Market. That's because they don't serve them. Their mashers are "plain."
