country cooking in Tallahassee?

Are there any little diners, off-the-beaten-track kind of places in or very near to Tallahassee that serve southern, country cooking? I've been to a place in Thomasville, GA, I think it was called Market Diner, that was good. Anywhere closer? Thanks so much.

  1. Bethel family restaurant on Tennessee St. in Tallahassee has very good traditional southern food. It is across the street from their church. Their hours seem to change a lot, so call first if you are going to go. I have only been for the lunch but it was wonderful. Otherwise there a few good country buffetts in town that are good for dinner. Country Kitchen out N. Monroe is the one that we usually go to.

    1. Sad to say most have closed. Most recently was Old South which was excellent. Place out north of Lake Jackson may be same one mentioned above. Try the pork chops, potato salad, mustard greens, etc

      1. Sunlight Cafe, 832 W Tharpe Street, has a great breakfast. Not exactly a country cooking type of place.

And at all cost stay away from Southern Fixin's - which is probably the worst of the worst of the worst. Can't believe they are still in business.

There is a new place off of Capital Circle NE called Brooma Cafe, it's right behind Carrabbas. Not the greatest service but the pork chops served on Thursday's are very tasty. They have fried chicken on Thursdays too.

For southern style seafood the Seineyard, off Woodville highway is the way to go. And Shingles Chicken House, near FAMU has great fried chicken and carrot cake. Good luck finding it - it's in a residential neighborhood in a house. Let me know if you need directions.

        1. I second Brooma Cafe but I think that it is only open for breakfast and lunch :(
